Vote on health insurance for New Albany city workers remains tabled

Officials: IACT not comparable to current options

NEW ALBANY — The New Albany Board of Public Works and Safety on Tuesday left a resolution concerning medical insurance for city workers tabled until next week.

Details of the coverage are still being finalized, and the city’s insurance agent was expected to meet with city employee unions before the board selects a plan.

One proposal that will likely not be seriously considered by the board is a bid submitted by IACT, or the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns. The City Council listened to a presentation in May from IACT officials concerning its recently launched insurance program, which is essentially based on a pooling system that combines funds from its members.

But City Controller and board of works member Kay Garry said the IACT proposal for New Albany isn’t cheaper than the options currently being weighed, and it also leaves out several benefits the city offers.

Retiree, dental, vision and life insurance are not included in the IACT bid that was received by the city Tuesday, Garry said.

“In my opinion, it is not comparable to what we have right now and what we will be offering” in September when the city’s plan is renewed, Garry said.

The IACT Medical Trust began in January, and some of the charter municipalities of the program are Lafayette, Mishawaka, Highland and Angola.

Insurance costs for the city are expected to rise this year. Coverage for public workers runs an expense of more than $4 million a year currently.
