NEW ALBANY — Jeffersonville resident Mark Scott has again asked the city’s Board of Public Works and Safety to crack down on noise downtown.

Scott lives at Maegan Point, a condominiums complex at the corner of Spring Street and Riverside Drive. The building is across the street from Sonny’s Island Grill and Bamboo Lounge, which Scott says frequently plays music too late and too loud.

“There’s no reason for this noise level getting where it is,” Scott told the board during its Wednesday morning meeting.

Chad Sprigler, who owns the business, said police have been called there before and have seen for themselves that the music has not been that loud.

“We’re trying to work with the police department,” Sprigler said.

He said other neighbors are happy that the business is there. And he said some Maegan Point residents frequent Sonny’s.

“If you’re going to live in that area, I think there’s got to be a little give and take.”

No action was taken on the matter during Wednesday’s meeting. Board members advised Scott to discuss the issue further with police.

In other business

• The board approved an up to $130,000 contract with Construction Solutions LLC. The company is being hired to help the city develop requests for qualifications related to a proposed downtown canal that would replace Michigan Avenue and Mulberry Street between Ohio Avenue and Market Street. The new waterway is being proposed as a means of quelling flooding problems in the area and spurring economic development.

• The board approved the route for the city’s annual Fourth of July parade. The parade, which is Saturday, July 3, this year to avoid conflict with Sunday church services, will travel its typical route, moving up Spring Street between Riverside Drive and Warder Park. It usually starts about 11 a.m.

• The board approved the closure of the Clark Memorial Bridge between 7 a.m. and noon Sept. 25 for the American Heart Association’s annual Heart Walk.
