Restaurant helping suicide prevention

Mike and Matt’s restaurant, 2835 Holman’s Lane in Jeffersonville, will be holding a fundraiser dinner for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention on Friday, Nov. 16.

Five percent of the proceeds from sales that day will be donated to the charity in the name of Michael W. Asher, the son of Jerry and Janie Asher.



Pastors giving presentation at library

Co-pastors of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church,  Jeffersonville, The Rev. Donald B. Hill and The Rev. Nancy Woodworth-Hill, will be presenting their recent trip to the Holy Land, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Nov. 16, at the Jeffersonville Township Public Library, 211 E. Court Ave., Jeffersonville.

In January 2012, Rev. Hill and his wife traveled with a clergy group to both Israel and Jordan.  Their presentation on Israel begins on the coast and includes Netanya, Caesarea Maritima, Mount Carmel, Tel Megiddo, Cana, Tiberius, Mount of the Beatitudes, the Sea of Galilee, Kursi, Chorazin, Capernaum, Yardenite, and the ruins of the Decapolis city Bet Shean.

Arts and Craft show will help animals

The Animal Protection Association (APA) is holding its second annual APA juried Arts and Craft show, “Christmas in the City,” 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 17, at St. Augustine Parish Hall, 315 E. Chestnut St., Jeffersonvile.

APA is currently seeking vendors to be in the show. All items must be made by the vendor. This is a professional show.

Band Boosters holding $10,000 raffle

The Jeffersonville High School Band Boosters are selling tickets for their second annual $10,000 cash raffle.

Tickets are $20 each or three for $50 and are available from any band booster. You can also look for band members and boosters selling the tickets before the start of JHS home basketball games. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold.

Other raffles will be held for: Papa John’s pizza for a year, an MP3 player from Best Buy, local restaurant gift certificates, gift baskets and a quilt handmade by a JHS Booster.

Proceeds from the $10,000 raffle will go towards the JHS Band Boosters’ 2012-13 capital campaign to upgrade the band rehearsal room.

Church hosting dessert auction

Atkins Chapel Church, 7834 Atkins Road, Floyds Knobs, will sponsor a dessert auction Saturday, Nov. 17. Free soup supper starts at 5:30  p.m. with the dessert auction at 6 p.m.

Thanksgiving breakfast planned

A Thanksgiving Breakfast is planned from 8 a.m. to noon, Sunday, Nov. 18, at the St. John’s Starlight Parish Hall/gym, 8310 St. John Road.

Sausage, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and more will be on the menu. All donations will go to the C.J. Smith Memorial Endowment and will be matched by the Harrison County Community Foundation. Endowment proceeds provide a summer ministry opportunity in the New Albany Deanery for a young adult who is exploring a vocation in youth ministry. CHARLESTOWN

5K to help feed the hungry

The Get Nothing and Love It 5K run/walk will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Charlestown State Park, Ind. 62, Charlestown.

There will be no T-shirts, no medals, just warm hearts. Entry fee is $10 or  $10 worth of nonperishable foods.

Event day registration at the park will begin at 7:30 a.m.. Preregistration will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Eastside Christian Church, 2319 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville.



Lecture on Lincoln is Nov. 29

The Filson Historical Society will be hosting a lecture,at  noon, Nov. 29, at the Jeffersonville Carnegie Library from Keith A. Erekson.

Erekson will be discussing Lincoln’s life in southern Indiana and more history on this part of his life. Program free and open to the public.

New Albany

New show opens Friday at Gallery

“Shavings, Shuttles, Slabs, and Sparkles” is the title of the new show at The Gallery on Pearl in New Albany.

The Gallery continues its fifth anniversary celebration by featuring four more of its most successful artists —  highlighting works in wood, fiber, ceramics, and jewelry. The show opens on Friday, Nov. 16, and continues through Dec. 28.  An opening night reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m., and will include an Artists’ Talk at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The four highlighted artists were chosen also with the thought that their creations make perfect and special gifts in the holiday season. The artists are:

• Wood artist Alan Mason, whose one-of-a-kind boxes show both remarkable creativity and superb woodworking skills.

• Fiber artist Sandy Duffy, whose fabric pieces including shawls, scarfs, and hand towels among other things, are made from exquisite hand-spun, hand-dyed, and hand-woven cloth.

• Carl deGraaf’s work in ceramics includes both decorative and practical pieces made in wonderful forms and glazes.

• And the unique pieces of jewelry made by Angela LeMaster offer elegance through the use of special metals and Swarovski crystal.

The Gallery on Pearl is located in the White House Centre, 222 Pearl St., in downtown New Albany. Normal gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
