High interest cancels Greenville meeting

Meeting to be held Feb. 6

GREENVILLE — The special meeting called last week to vote on an ordinance to create a town manager’s position for the town of Greenville was canceled Monday night.

Greenville Town Council President Talbotte Richardson said the council received “so many requests” from residents wanting to attend the meeting that they didn’t think it was fair to hold it Monday in the small town hall. Richardson said the meeting will be 7 p.m., Feb. 6, likely at Greenville Elementary School.

On Jan. 9, the council approved on first reading the ordinance by a 3-2 vote to hire former councilman Randal Johnes as town manager for two years.

Johnes was defeated in his bid for re-election last November by one vote by Darryl Kepley. Johnes’ title would be town manager and water/utility consultant. He would be paid $150 a week for two years, then the need for the position would be re-examined by the council.

Richardson, Greg Redden and Patti Hayes voted in favor of the ordinance on first reading while Kepley and Bob Wright voted against.
