Old Salem Road designated by Clark County Commissioners

Property donated to Indiana Department of Transportation

JEFFERSONVILLE — Following up on the groundbreaking for the Ohio River Bridges Project and the Old Salem Road extension, the Clark County Commissioners offered a change for the roadway at their meeting Thursday evening.

The commissioners unanimously approved a recommendation that Old Salem Road be designated as a “collector” road.

Clarksville-based Gohmann Asphalt and Construction Co. is completing the $3.2 million, 3,000-foot road extension. It is being designed to accommodate heavy trucks, which includes a 170-foot, two-span bridge that will form part of the proposed Interstate 265 interchange. When the east-end bridge crossing is finished, Old Salem Road will be the first exit north of the bridge for heavy trucks and will connect the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville and River Ridge Commerce Center.

“It’s easier to get federal funding for collector roads,” said Commissioner Ed Meyer, explaining why the designation was made.

Commissioners Attorney Greg Fifer said the road would be eligible for federal funding through the Indiana Department of Transportation.

“It’s designed to handle more capacity than a local road, which today it doesn’t,” he said.

Resolution 12-2012 was unanimously approved.

Star Hill Road donation

Fifer also offered a request that the county donate a 2.65 acre parcel of the right-of-way purchased to construct the Star Hill Road project connecting Ind. 60 in Borden with Starlight.

He said the engineers on the project and INDOT requested the property be donated to the state because it will become part of the right-of-way of Ind. 60.

The commissioners unanimously approved resolution 13-2012 to donate the property to INDOT.

Harrison County donates $20,000

The Harrison County Commissioners donated $20,000 to Clark County for tornado assistance, related to the March 2 tornadoes.

The only requirement for Clark County was to show Harrison County how the money was spent.

An interlocal agreement was unanimously approved to accept the funds, which will be placed in the nonreverting tornado relief fund.

Underwood sewers completed

Pam Bischoff, charitable financial specialist from River Hills, said the Underwood Sewer Project improvements are wrapped up and in order to close out the project the commissioners needed to sign off on the final inspection and project completion report.

Bischoff said the construction wrapped up in may and the inspection of the project was completed in June. The commissioners unanimously approved the contract.
