U.S. House Rep. Baron Hill has agreed to appear at two debates this fall ahead of the November general election.
According to a news release issued Friday, Hill accepted invitations from Vincennes University and Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs to appear at their debates.
Hill is running for re-election in Indiana’s 9th District.
“Voters deserve a full and fair debate, and that is exactly what I want to give them,” the Democrat from Seymour said. “I will spend this next month taking my message directly to the voters as I walk through the district, and I look forward to doing the same in the debates.”
Hill’s main challenger, Republican Todd Young of Bloomington, agreed to appear at the debates months ago, according to his campaign.
Earlier this week, Young asked Hill to appear at seven town hall meetings across the 9th District including either Jeffersonville or New Albany.
Young Campaign Manager Ryan Burchfield said Friday debates are usually scripted and rigid in nature, with pre-determined questions and little crowd interaction.
“What we’re really looking for are open town hall discussions,” Burchfield said.
“We’re glad Baron Hill has decided to do these debates, as we have. We think it’s a great start. But anyone who wants to run for public office should talk openly with the people they wish to represent.”
Hill has said he will walk through each county in the 9th District in August to meet with residents and talk issues.
Burchfield said the Vincennes debate will likely be Oct. 13. He added a date has not been determined for the Bloomington debate.

Several members from the audience also questioned other financial matters of the city, and whether the council was aware that Gibson received health insurance as city attorney under England though it had been stated by the previous administration his contract did not include medical benefits.
