New Albany man killed in Clark County crash

Police: Cody A. Smith, 23, struck two concrete walls

CLARK COUNTY — A New Albany man died Monday evening following a one-car crash on Interstate 65 in Clark County, police say.

Cody A. Smith, 23, was transported from the scene at the 4.4 mile marker and pronounced dead at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville. Indiana State Police troopers and Clark County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded at about 6 p.m. to the scene and found a 1997 Acura TL driven by Smith with extensive damage.

The preliminary report shows Smith was driving in the far right-hand lane of I-65 when for an unknown reason his vehicle crossed all lanes of traffic and struck the inside concrete barrier wall. The vehicle then traveled back across all the lanes of traffic where it came to rest after striking the concrete barrier wall on the far right side of the interstate, according to a press release.

Smith was not wearing his seat belt, police say.

This crash is under investigation with crash reconstructionists from the ISP Sellersburg post reconstructing the crash scene. Agencies assisting were Sellersburg fire and EMS and the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
