NEW WASHINGTON —
Young children were left alone in a vehicle as two women tried to elude capture Monday in New Washington, according to an Indiana State Police news release.
Trooper Mark LaMaster observed a maroon Toyota Camry traveling at what appeared to be a high rate of speed at 3:15 p.m. He attempted to catch up to the driver when the vehicle turned abruptly into a residence in the 22600 block of Ind. 62.
The driver, Tonya Cassidy, 30, of Madison, and passenger, Alecia Adams, 27, of Raiford, Fla., both ran from the car, leaving the two children — ages 3 and 5 — inside the vehicle unattended, according to police. Troopers learned Adams had an active warrant and that she asked Cassidy, who did not have a valid license, to turn into the residence to avoid being caught.
It was also discovered that Adams had cocaine and drug paraphernalia and Cassidy had controlled substances without a valid prescription, the news release says. The children were released to their father, and the vehicle was impounded. Cassidy and Adams were arrested and transported to the Michael L. Becher Adult Corrections Complex.
Cassidy is preliminarily charged with two counts of class D felony possession of a controlled substance and two counts of class D felony child abandonment. Adams faces charges of class D felony possession of cocaine, class A misdemeanor possession of synthetic cannabis and class A misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
