JEFFERSONVILLE —
A Greater Clark County Schools principal has filed candidacy for a school board seat in Louisville’s Jefferson County Public Schools this year.
James Sexton, principal of Jeffersonville High School, said though he won’t campaign hard, he will go for a seat in JCPS’s seventh district, where he was principal of two high schools.
Sexton said he doesn’t think he’ll have any trouble balancing his schedule between working as a principal and a board member if elected.
“I don’t see where there would be any conflict at all,” Sexton said. “I’ve never worked a 40-hour week in my educational career and I’m in my 47th year. I wanted to use my expertise here as well as there if elected. If there’s a conflict in meeting times, [I would prioritize] Jeff High, this is my focus.”
Sexton spent 43 years in the area of JCPS district seven as the principal of Eastern and Jeffersontown high schools. He said as close as he was to the community, he wanted to make a difference for the schools there.
“That community has been a part of my life for a long time and there are some things that need to change in Jefferson County and that has to do with policy,” Sexton said. “But Jeff High is where I want to be.”
Andrew Melin, Greater Clark superintendent, said he doesn’t think Sexton’s candidacy or potential election to the seat will affect his job in Clark County.
“Mr. Sexton has a great understanding of the educational system and his running for Jefferson County school board has no impact on Greater Clark County Schools or Jeffersonville High School,” Melin said.
