Techshot earns $750K NASA contract

Tool will have applications on earth in dealing with infectious diseases

NEW ALBANY — Techshot Inc. has signed a $750,000 contract with NASA to develop a tool that will aid in the safe transfer of chemical and biological material for testing while in space.

The company is based at the Purdue Research Park of Southeast Indiana, and its Analytical Containment Transfer Tool, or ACT, will be developed for potential use by astronauts and researchers in the International Space Station National Laboratory.

The deal comes on the heels of a $100,000 agreement for preliminary design work done on the tool.

“There is a real need for tools such as ours that can help get samples analyzed while still in space rather than after they’ve been returned to Earth,” said John Vellinger, COO of Techshot, in a news release issued by the Purdue Research Park.

“To date, most research payloads have been completely sealed because spilling even a single drop of what is inside could be hazardous to the crew. But [ACT] is being designed with multiple redundant containment features, which ensure that astronauts can use it to safely extract samples from one part of the space laboratory and process them in another.”

The tool will have uses for laboratories and clinics on Earth that work with infectious diseases or other material requiring multiple levels of contentment, according to Vellinger.
