Rare book collection moves to former museum

Remnant Trust used to be housed in downtown Jeffersonville

WINONA LAKE — Curators of a collection of more than 1,100 rare books and historical documents dating back to the 16th century say they are moving its headquarters from Southern Indiana to a former museum in the northern part of the state.

Officials with the Remnant Trust say they are moving the collection to the former Billy Sunday Museum in Winona Lake, about 40 miles west of Fort Wayne. They decided to leave a facility in Jeffersonville last year because of problems with humidity, which could damage the collection.

The Carnegie Library Foundation in Jeffersonville had spent millions to renovate the former library and continue to seek a new tenant.

Remnant President Kris Bex tells The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne that the collection won’t be open to public, at least initially. But Bex says the Remnant Trust board hopes to train docents and make the collection available at least once a month.
