Work to shut down Salem-Noble

Lights and crossing to be completed in two weeks

JEFFERSONVILLE — Construction will close Salem-Noble road at the intersection with Ind. 62 for about two weeks.

The closure comes as Amazon.com Inc. is beginning to ramp up its operations.

Plans to install a traffic light at the intersection of Salem-Noble Road and Ind. 62 have been in the works since 2009 to help alleviate some of the accidents that have occurred at the dangerous intersection and to accommodate future development in the River Ridge Commerce Center. Included in the project’s design for the Salem-Noble Road and Ind. 62 intersection were extended turn lanes on Ind. 62 — one left turn lane off of Ind. 62 and one right turn lane coming from Charlestown.

Jeffersonville, Clark County and the River Ridge Development Authority have all pledged funds for the project, which was the site of two fatal accidents that occurred within a year-and-a-half. Jeffersonville and Clark County each pledged $185,000 and River Ridge paid $370,000 to cover the 20 percent match required for the project estimated to cost $2.7 million.

River Ridge Engineer and Project Manager Marc Hildenbrand said the closure is so that work can be completed to replace and widen the railroad crossing on Salem-Noble Road.

“They are also putting in signal arms to increase the safety of that railroad crossing,” he said.

Construction is expected to begin Monday morning, Oct. 8, and will likely take two weeks.

Hildenbrand added that construction was delayed until Monday so project planners could notify schools and emergency personnel of the upcoming road closure.

And while the wires and poles are up for the traffic lights at the intersection, there are still no functioning signals installed.

“We’re working through a few things ... but we expect probably about the time that the crossing work is completed that signal will be operational,” Hildenbrand said.
