Henryville overwhelmed with generosity

Man drops off envelopes filled with money

HENRYVILLE — The generosity of strangers continues to amaze as the recovery effort goes on in Henryville this week.

Toby Jenkins, pastor at First Baptist Church Henryville, said a donor came to him Wednesday with six envelopes stuffed with about $180 each.

“He said, ‘I’m just doing it because that’s what I’m supposed to do,’” Jenkins said.

Jenkins said he didn’t know the man as being from the area and he wasn’t interested in publicity. For his part, Jenkins followed his lead and gave the money away to those in the most damaged parts of town.

“I just drove around to people who had nothing,” said Jenkins. “I pulled up into yards where I saw nothing but concrete and dirt” and gave the money to those people.

He said that was just one of the amazing stories taking place in Henryville recently. Many of the stories he’s heard have come second hand, however, so it’s hard to pin down what is true and what isn’t sometimes, he said.

One thing he does have first hand knowledge of is his church’s efforts.

It’s now in the process of scheduling teams for those wishing to volunteer through First Baptist Church Henryville.

He posted a message on the church’s website Thursday noting that the next two weekends are looking good for volunteers, but the schedule is open after that. Those wanting to help serve should consider the last two weekends of the month.

“We are needing teams to sort and organizing at the church, go out into the community to help with clean up, taking supplies from the church to individuals within the community, and sharing the gospel to a hurting community,” he said.

Those looking to offer financial support can make checks payable to FBC Henryville. They can be delivered to the church building or mailed to: Southern Seminary [attn: Events Office] 2825 Lexington Road, Louisville, Ky 40280. The church is using this offsite location as a temporary secure and convenient location.

Those interested in getting in touch with the church can check out fbchenryville.com or call 502-551-5157.
