Nearly five months after tornadoes tore through northern Clark County, volunteer efforts continue to spread to make sure those in need don’t go without.
Safe Harbor Christian Church is partnering with Kenneth Copeland Ministries to give away more than 1,200 boxes of food to up to 400 families between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday at the church.
The “reach” event will offer boxes of food and toiletries to those families affected by the tornadoes.
“It’s food for a week,” said TC Baker, pastor of Safe Harbor Christian Church.
He added that as of Tuesday night, 97 families had registered to receive a voucher for a food box.
Although it’s been several months since the storms hit the area and cleanup has wrapped up, there is still a need for those in Henryville, Otisco, Marysville and Borden.
“A few months [after a disaster] people seem to leave,” said Riley Stephenson, minister of evangelism for Kenneth Copeland Ministries, referring to relief efforts. “The needs are still there. People that were needy before ... that didn’t change their situation one bit. It actually made it worse.”
So months after the storms, with the rebuilding effort well under way, he said Safe Harbor and Kenneth Copeland Ministries are partnering to make sure those residents are not forgotten.
In addition to handing out food boxes, the entities will be hosting a little bit of fun after a brief service Saturday.
“We just wanted to make it a community event,” Stephenson said. “It just brings the community together.”
Following the Saturday “reach” event, he said there will be music, face painting for kids and a hot dog cookout for attendees.
“It’s also to rekindle the love in the community,” Baker said. “It’s going to be a fun day.”
He explained the church wanted to offer some fun to those who may not have been able to take a summer vacation or get away for a few days because they have been dealing with the aftermath of the March storms. Baker added that the church will also be hosting a similar event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 with inflatables for kids and refreshments.
“[It’s to] remind us who we were before the tornado [and] remind us we’re still here,” he said. “We haven’t lost that spirit of community.”
