WEST LAFAYETTE —
Police in West Lafayette have shot a man on a riding lawnmower who they say pulled a handgun on officers.
The Journal & Courier of Lafayette reported the man was taken to a hospital Friday morning after officers shot him in the leg and shoulder. The man was not immediately identified by authorities.
Lt. Troy Harris said the man was on a red riding lawnmower heading southeast in an alley near Purdue University about 9:30 a.m. He was being followed by police cars with lights on. When squad cars surrounded him, police say he got off the lawnmower and pulled a gun from his pants.
Police say the man did not fire a shot.
Many homes and businesses in the area were empty because Purdue is on spring break.
