JEFFERSONVILLE —
The trial of a Jeffersonville man accused of murdering his estranged wife with a pocket knife in 2011 is set to begin in Clark County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
Edward “Dale” Bagshaw is facing one count of murder for the killing of Kelly Bagshaw, who was 30 years old at the time of her death.
Bagshaw called police to his residence at Lafayette Square Apartments in the 1500 block of East 10th St. in the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011. He told dispatchers he had been in a fight with his wife and cut her, Jeffersonville Police Department Detective Todd Hollis reported in 2011.
According to a probable-cause affidavit, the first officer to arrive at the scene found Kelly Bagshaw lying on the pavement next to her white Toyota Camry in the parking lot of the apartment complex. She was transported to Clark Memorial Hospital where she died shortly thereafter.
Hollis stated after the incident that Bagshaw surrendered to police and was taken into custody without incident.
The Bagshaws were married but had been separated and she was living with a friend in Louisville, Hollis said.
On the day of her death, Kelly Bagshaw went to her husband’s apartment to pick up two young children they have in common. According to the affidavit, Dale Bagshaw told police he met his wife in the parking lot and entered the passenger side of her vehicle.
The two became involved in a verbal altercation regarding “marital issues” at which time her cell phone began ringing. He said he grabbed the phone from her, and she began fighting him for the phone.
At some point during the fight, he grabbed a folding knife from his pocket and started stabbing her. Hollis reported Kelly Bagshaw suffered multiple stab wounds. According to an autopsy report, she was stabbed in the head and upper body.
The knife used in the attack was recovered from the vehicle.
“Their separation had been difficult, and there had been some tension in the relationship,” Hollis said at the time.
Jury selection is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m.
