The owner of an Austin bar was arrested Tuesday for allegedly hosting illegal card games at his business, police say.
At about 7:15 p.m., Indiana State Police Sellersburg Post troopers, Indiana Gaming Commission agents, and Indiana State Excise Police agents entered Boomer’s Bar and Grill in Austin, said ISP Sgt. Jerry Goodin in a news release.
Gaming agents had information that illegal card games and tournaments were happening at the bar, and joined forces with ISP and excise police to investigate the alleged crimes. A group of agents and troopers went to the bar and found more than 50 people playing in the card game, and conducted an inspection of the business, Goodin said.
The owner of the bar, Wesley Thompson, 47, of Scottsburg, was arrested at the scene. He is being held in Scott County Jail on suspicion of promoting professional gambling. If he is charged with that D felony, he faces six months to three years in jail and a $10,000 fine. Authorities also seized more than $1,000 in cash, playing cards, gambling chips, and ledgers from Thompson’s bar, Goodin said.
