Showing Hoosier cheer: Students send cards to soldiers

When Debbie Trotter heard of Hoosier Cheer for Our Heroes — a project organized by Indiana Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman to send cards to troops overseas — she wanted to help in a big way.

So, the home school adviser for New Washington and Northaven Elementary schools decided to enlist the help of her students.

They created 800 cards.

“I’m so proud, I can just cry,” Trotter said. “It’s impressive to have 800, but to read the notes, I can hardly do that.

“The notes they put in there are just precious. They actually care about the soldiers.”

Trotter said the issue hits home for some students who know someone serving overseas, such as 7-year-old Madison Bookwalter, whose dad is in the U.S. Navy.

“It’s cool, because it’s the first time he’s on a ship when I can send him a card,” the New Washington first-grader said.

Others who don’t have any loved ones overseas say it feels good to help spread the holiday spirit.

“I think it’s pretty cool, because you get to send cards and it cheers them up,” said 7-year-old Hannah Hughes, a student at New Washington Elementary.

“It’s a good idea, because they are helping our country and I think they’ll be happy,” 7-year-old Bailey Rosenbarger, another New Washington student, said of sending the cards. “[I feel] sad that they couldn’t come home.”

Others enjoyed the project for other reasons.

“It was fun, because we got to color,” 7-year-old Scott Swoboda said.

Betty Bennett, principal at New Washington Elementary, said this project is something that can bring everyone together.

“I think it’s great,” she said. “Regardless of what your political views are, I think something that we all care about is the servicemen overseas.”

Trotter collected the cards and gave them to a representative from Skillman’s office, who was visiting Clark County on Friday.

Last year, she had students at Northaven help out by making about 1,000 cards for the project.
