Lead warning issued by state of Indiana

STAFF REPORTS

Indiana health officials are warning Hoosiers that elevated lead levels have been found in products sold at Target stores.

The product causing concern is Wink Bath and Body’s shimmer lip gloss in the following flavors: mango colada, frosted pineapple and strawberry sangria. As of Thursday, Target removed all the products from its shelves.

“People that have previously purchased this product should be aware that the cap on this product contains lead that exceeds allowable limits,” said Dave McCormick, director of the lead program at the Indiana State Department of Health, in a news release.

Health officials warn that elevated levels of lead in blood are especially dangerous for children younger than six years of age, whose developing brains are particularly vulnerable. In addition to injury to the brain and the nervous system, lead can negatively affect learning and behavior.

“Children who may have been in contact with these recalled products should immediately receive a blood test to determine whether they were exposed to a lead hazard,” warned McCormick.
