REPORT: 1 student dead, 1 injured in Harrison County Crash

RAMSEY — A Southern Indiana high school senior is dead and another hurt when the car they were in crashed behind their school, according to a reporter from newsgathering partner WLKY-TV in Louisville.

It happened Tuesday on Whiskey Run Road about a quarter mile from north Harrison High in Ramsey just minutes after classes dismissed for the day. The injured teenager was flown to University Hospital, but his condition had not been disclosed as of Wednesday morning, WLKY reported. His name has not been released, but WLKY was told he was the driver of the car.

The Harrison County coroner identified his passenger as 17-year-old David Austin, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The school’s principal says the driver lost control and the car flipped, throwing Austin from the car, killing him.

One classmate remembered Austin as a “jokester” who liked to laugh.

Austin’s death comes just a couple weeks into a new school year and only eight months after two teenagers from North Harrison died in separate incidents.

“Last year was just a tragic time for us, and for this to just happen right on top of that is just a really tough thing for everyone involved, and I can’t imagine how those parents feel,” Principal Steve Hatton told WLKY.

Several of the sporting events the school had scheduled Tuesday night were canceled after the crash. Grief counselors are at the school.
