A couple from Austin was killed on Interstate 65 near Scottsburg on Sunday after a wreck forced them across the median and into oncoming traffic.

Indiana State Police were called to the 32 mile marker of I-65 just before 1 p.m. for a fatal crash between a southbound semi tractor trailer and a northbound pickup truck.

The deceased victims were identified as James C. Jewell, 85, and Thelma E. Jewell, 75. They were traveling northbound on I-65 in a silver 2003 Toyota pickup truck, according to an investigation by Trooper Nathan Teusch. Their truck was hit from behind by a red Ford Ranger pickup truck being driven by 30-year-old Jennifer Just, of Borden.

The impact caused James Jewell to lose control of the vehicle and cross the median. Kendall W. Kraft, 48, of Austin, was driving a 2005 Volvo tractor southbound and veered to the right but was unable to avoid the pickup truck.

Just and Kraft were reportedly not injured.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information relevant to the initial crash is asked to call Teusch at the Sellersburg Post 812-872-6743.
