Farm equipment missing from 4-H

No-till drill reported missing Wednesday

CHARLESTOWN — A piece of farm equipment was stolen from the Clark County Soil and Water Conservation District, but the district’s employees aren’t sure when.

Melanie Davis, administrative coordinator with the conservation district, said they became aware the equipment was missing when an employee went to perform regular maintenance on the machinery Wednesday.

The farm equipment, a 10-foot Great Plains no-till drill, was being stored at the Clark County 4-H Fairgrounds off Ind. 62. The equipment being stolen was a surprise to the district’s employees.

“We’ve never had any trouble before,” Davis said. “It wasn’t locked up or anything.”

The theft wasn’t noticed immediately as the no-till drill sits at a location where it wasn’t in plain view. Davis said she believes it may have been taken sometime over the last month.

She added whomever took the machinery knew what it was and came prepared.

“It’s a pretty good size piece of equipment,” she said. “We’re thinking somebody may have scrapped it. It’s a piece of equipment that has a specific use.”

The no-till drill is used to prevent soil loss and erosion and the conservation district rents the equipment to area farmers. The conservation district has filed a report with the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, but is still hoping the no-till drill will be returned to its original location at the fairgrounds, and if so, no questions will be asked, the district said in a press release.

If you have information on the whereabouts of the drill, the conservation district is asking people to call its office at 812-256-2330 ext. 3, or call the Clark County Sheriff’s Department.
