After leaving New Albany, Windstream begins production in North Vernon

NEW ALBANY — Windstream Technologies has begun mass-producing its TurboMill wind turbines at its North Vernon facility.

The company still has administrative staff working at the Purdue Research Park of Southeast Indiana in New Albany, but launched its production operation in North Vernon last year.

Windstream and the New Albany City Council were in discussions about a $3.7 million financing package that would have included backing bonds for the assembly line with public funds.

But the company decided on North Vernon in June as negotiations sputtered with New Albany. Several council members had concerns over the financing package, as tax-increment financing revenue would have been used to pay off the 10-year note if Windstream defaulted on the loan.

The TurboMill is a turbine designed for residential use. Windstream officials said they are initially hiring 30 employees for the North Vernon facility, but that they expect to employ an additional 100 people by 2015.
