JEFFERSONVILLE —
Gray & Wells Collision Center will soon move.
The Jeffersonville Redevelopment Commission agreed this week to provide the business with $20,000 in grants, which is to be used to fix up its new location at 2005 E. 10th St. The grant was made under a program which makes money available to businesses that improve properties in certain areas of the city, including 10th Street.
Speaking to the commission Wednesday night, owner John Wells said he plans on investing about $2 million in property improvements to the new location. Of that, about $70,000 will be dedicated to improvements on the exterior of the property.
“We’re trying to make it really nice,” Wells said.
In addition to the body shop operation, the collision center will also have an Enterprise rental car counter and a Progressive Insurance branch inside. Those would both be new additions to the business.
Generally, the city’s facade grant program only doles out $10,000 to individual applicants. An exception was made as the business is moving as a result of a city project. The business has operated along Michigan Avenue for 43 years, but its current property is being bought out as a result of sewer work and flood mitigation downtown.
Wells said he hopes to have his new location operational by late June or early July.
