NEW ALBANY —
The New Albany Flood Control Board approved an $85,000 bridge repair project this week.
Known as the Captain Frank Road Bridge, the span on Braeview Drive provides access to a small subdivision, and was closed after Street Commissioner Mickey Thompson deemed it was in danger of collapsing last year.
“A hole came up in the pavement and when we got to looking at it underneath, we saw the underside was rusted and rotting away,” Thompson said Wednesday.
Residents of the subdivision currently have access to their homes only through Wildwood Lane.
John G Brinkworth Engineering Co. was tapped to examine the bridge, and the firm has recommended the span be replaced. The firm has prepared construction plans and obtained permits through agencies including the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
According to Mayor Jeff Gahan’s administration, if the bridge were to fail, it could disturb the flow of Valley View Creek and lead to potential flooding in the surrounding neighborhood.
The flood control board cited a need to maintain traffic flow and prevent potential flooding as reasons for supporting the resolution.
The project isn’t big enough to be in the Floyd County government’s domain because of the size of the bridge, Thompson said. The county is responsible for all bridge maintenance, but the spans have to be a certain size.
A date for the start of the bridge replacement project hasn’t been announced.
“I’m pleased that the [flood control board] approved this much needed project, and I am confident that the residents in the surrounding area agree,” Gahan said in a news release.
