JEFFERSONVILLE —
Authorities are mum on the reason behind Tuesday’s raid of TC Auto Center Inc. in Jeffersonville as well as a home in Utica.
Agents from the FBI, Indiana State Police and Jeffersonville Police Department were seen at the shop, located at 1313 E. Market St., starting around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. Agents at the scene declined to answer questions from the press. Public information officers from the state and local police directed inquiries to the FBI’s office.
FBI special agent Wendy Osborne, with the Indianapolis office, told a reporter that all information related to the raid has been sealed. She would not answer questions related to the reach of the investigation or how long it would last. Several state and local authorities also declined comment.
At the scene, officials were going through several vehicles on the lot. Agents were seen photographing the interior, exterior and trunks of some of those vehicles. Some of the cars were being towed away.
There were some rare vehicles on the lot, including classic cars and a late model Mustang with vertically opening doors. A property in Utica also was searched and classic cars were towed from that lot as well, according to newsgathering partner WLKY-TV in Louisville.
According to state and county records, the business is owned by Terry Crofford. Indiana Secretary of State’s Office records show it has been operating there since 2002. Before it opened, the building was a gas station.
A search of criminal records for Crofford in Clark and Floyd counties yielded no results for Crofford for criminal charges or infractions.
Both uniformed and undercover agents — those wearing jeans, T-shirts, ball caps along with a badge and gun — were at the shop, as well as some civilians. Windbreakers worn by agents indicated they were from the Safe Streets Task Force.
According to the FBI’s website, that task force was established in 1991 for the purpose of combining the efforts of federal, state, and local agencies in an effort to stop violent felons from operating a criminal empire or continuing to conduct criminal activity.
