> SOUTHERN INDIANA — JEFFERSONVILLE

 

MLK rally planned for Monday

A rally is planned for noon Monday at Warder Park to recognize the work of Dr. Martin Luther King and discuss the economic impact of today’s policies on the poor. The event will last until 1 p.m. with a variety of guest speakers, according to Barbara Anderson, executive director of Haven House Services Inc., an organizer.

The public is invited to attend. It’s one of several such rallies around the state.



Easter Egg hunt on the way

The Howard Steamboat Museum, 1101 E. Market St., will host a free Easter egg hunt at 11 a.m. April 9.

Children, who must be accompanied by an adult, through age 5 will hunt on the west lawn. Six, 7 and 8 year olds will hunt on the east lawn.

Bring your own basket and camera. Free goodie bags will be given to each child. Children may visit with the Easter bunny before and after the hunt.

NEW ALBANY

Mayoral candidates to speak

The Community Women for Unity and Equality will host The Great Debate, a question-and-answer session with the candidates for New Albany Mayor at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Griffin Center, 1140 Griffin St., New Albany.

St. Mary’s hosts craft show

St. Mary’s Altar Society will host the third-annual Spring Fling Craft & Vendor Show and Luncheon from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 9 in St. Mary’s Academy gym and cafeteria, East Eighth and Elm streets, New Albany.

The show will feature a variety of booths including jewelry, spring floral arrangements, quilted, sewn and crocheted items, candles and more.

The luncheon will include soup, chicken salad croissant, pasta/fruit salad, drink and homemade dessert. Call the parish office at 812-944-0417 for more information.



Hospital to screen for joint pain

Floyd Memorial Hospital Total Joint Replacement Center, 1850 State St., New Albany, will sponsor free joint pain screening, 7 a.m. to noon April 9 in the hospital’s Wound Healing Center.

The free screening includes X-rays and a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon. Registration is required. To schedule an appointment, call 800-4-SOURCE.



CLARKSVILLE

 Three-point shootout set

Clarksville Historical Society will host the eighth-annual Shooting with the Stars 3-Point Basketball Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Clarksville High School main gymnasium, 800 Dr. Dot Lewis Drive, Clarksville.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first round of play at 6:30 p.m. Thirty locally-sponsored teams, each consisting of 10 shooters and three rebounders, will compete to see how many three-point shots can be made in five minutes. In addition, each shooter will get one NBA shot for 6 points each.

Admission is free and the public is invited.



GEORGETOWN

Bearcat run and walk scheduled

Registration is open for the inaugural Georgetown Elementary PTA Bearcat 2-Miler Fun Run and Walk at 9 a.m. April 9, beginning and ending at Georgetown Elementary School.

The two-mile close course consists of mostly flat surfaces with some rolling hills. Proceeds from the race will benefit Georgetown PTA programs and initiatives. All participants will receive a T-shirt displaying the Bearcat 2-Miler logo, a chance at several door prizes and food and drink after the race.

Packet pickup and late registration will be in the school gymnasium from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Race starts at 9 a.m. sharp rain or shine.

CHARLESTOWN

Wildflower hike at Park

There will be a wildflower hike at Charlestown State Park at 1 p.m. Sunday.

People can meet at the trail 1 parking lot. The trail is a rugged 2.4 miles with many limestone outcroppings harboring beautiful spring wildflowers.

The park fee is $5 for Indiana vehicles and $7 for out-of-state vehicles. The park is located on Ind. 62 in Charlestown.



CORYDON

Civil War returns to old capital

The Civil War returns to Indiana’s first state capital April 9 with re-enactors from the Ohio Valley Civil War Association camping on the capitol square, acting out demonstrations of camp life, artillery, infantry and the role of women in the Civil War.

Firing demonstrations are scheduled for 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. with the camp being open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The encampment is free and open to the public.

Also, the Corydon Capitol State Historic Site will be open for tours during the encampment. All active and retired military personnel — with ID — can receive reduced rates of $1 per person.

Education Foundation hosts gala

The New Albany-Floyd County Education Foundation will host its third-annual gala fundraising event at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Huber’s Orchard & Winery’s Plantation Hall, Starlight.

This year’s theme is Get Smart with Smart Board Technology, which is in support of the foundation’s goal of funding the purchase of smart board technology for every classroom in the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp.

JEFFERSONVILLE

Parks offers adult softball league

The Jeffersonville Parks Department will offer Adult Summer Softball Leagues beginning May 9 and applications are currently being accepted.

Co-Ed Recreation League will play Monday nights, Men’s E League will play Tuesday and Friday nights; Men’s 50 & Over League will play Wednesday nights; Co-Ed Serenity League will play Thursday nights.

Each team will be guaranteed 10 league games and a single elimination tournament will follow. Teams must pay their full registration fee prior to being allowed to participate in the league. There will be no exceptions to this rule! The first eight teams in each league to fill out their registration form and pay the entry fee will be guaranteed a spot in our leagues. Registration form and payment can be mailed or taken in person to the Jeffersonville Parks Department Main Office at: Jeffersonville Parks Department, 2011 Summer Softball Leagues, 500 Quartermaster Court, Room 212, Jeffersonville, 47130.

All league fees are $425.
