Man charged in Jeffersonville burglary

Report says man busted out window, then ran from police

JEFFERSONVILLE — A Jeffersonville man was charged in Clark County Circuit Court No. 1 on Friday for the burglary of a home on Douglas Boulevard, near Meijer, that occurred Tuesday, Dec. 18.

Jamar Lovon Williams, 21, of 3104 Holmans Lane, was seen in the home about 1 a.m. by a resident who called police. The man reported to Jeffersonville police he was awakened by the noise of someone beating on his door and had forced his way into the home, police reported in the arrest narrative. The resident was still in the bedroom when Williams busted out a bedroom window with a two-by-four piece of lumber that had been left in the backyard, police reported.

“The suspect pulled back the blinds and saw the victim [who then] took off running in a southward direction,” according to the police report.

A Jeffersonville Police Department officer responded to the home, and a second officer in the area located a man matching the description given by the resident, running down Meijer Drive. Another officer reported that he saw Williams in the wooded area behind the Goodwill store, and that it appeared he saw the uniformed officer and began running away. The officer reported that he told Williams to stop, the area was surrounded and that there was nowhere to go.

JPD officers set up a perimeter, and a K-9 unit was brought in to search the area.

According to the report, a called police about a man who had jumped a fence into her backyard on Windmill Lane, located behind Meijer. The woman later told police that she had heard her dogs barking and when she went outside to see what was causing them to bark, she saw Williams.

“When [Williams] saw [the woman], he stated to her, ‘Please don’t call police. Please don’t call police.’ [The woman] advised [police] she went back into the house and then called the police department,” according to a police report.

Officers later located Williams on nearby Sunrise Circle and took him into custody.

“The suspect was very belligerent to police and yelled obscenities toward arresting officers,” according to the police report.

After Williams was taken into custody, the resident of the burglarized home made a positive identification.

Along with the B felony burglary charge, Williams was also charged in court with resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor, and refusal to identify, a class C misdemeanor.

During Friday’s hearing, Clark County Judge Daniel Moore set Williams’ bond at $40,000 court-cash, 10 percent of which must be posted for his release. He is scheduled to return to the court for a pretrial conference Feb. 14.

Clark County Deputy Prosecutor Jake Elder requested the bond amount, adding the amount is appropriate as Williams currently has pending charges in an unrelated case. Williams is facing two charges of battery, resisting law enforcement, and marijuana possession, all class A misdemeanors, for an incident occurring in Clarksville in February.

According to a Clarksville police report, Williams assaulted two women after they stepped in to stop a fight he provoked with another man. When he was being processed at the jail, a small bag of marijuana was found in one of his shoes.

For the February charges, Williams is scheduled to appear for a pretrial conference Jan. 23.
