NEW ALBANY —
Dailene Martin Bobbitt wanted to write a book about New Albany’s bicentennial, but she wanted it to be something different than the typical history book.
With “Bicentennial Scrapbook of New Albany, Indiana 1813-2013” she has done just that.
The book is full of old photos and history, but it also has small tidbits and fun facts of information on every page which are easy to read. Many are personal stories from residents.
“It’s a little bit of this and that. It’s the history of New Albany in a lot of little parts,” she said.
The book is full of 750 photos, and many of the illustrations were drawn by Bobbitt. Another interesting part of her book are the old advertisements from New Albany businesses on several of the pages. Many of her photos were borrowed from the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library.
She said some of her information came from talking to her 92-year-old father and 87-year-old mother.
“My father is a storyteller. He was born and raised here,” she said.
She said her book focuses on churches, schools and people from New Albany. There is also a section on natural disasters — mainly the 1937 flood and the tornado of 1917 — which have struck the city.
Her book is 206 pages long and sells for $30. She said in three weeks, she has sold around 180 copies.
There are a few books already released on New Albany’s bicentennial including
“Historic New Albany, Indiana: By the River’s Edge,” which was recently released. However, Bobbitt said each book is different.
“They all serve their own purpose and have something to give,” she said. “I am not in competition. I am not trying to say everybody buy mine.”
The book is available at several businesses including Endris Jewelers, Mariposa Consignment Shop, Aebersold Florist, Aunt Artie’s Antique Mall and Mulberry House Antiques. Bobbitt also hopes to have it soon at the Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services gift shop.

Photos: Aftermath of massive tornado in Moore
Storm victims were pulled from the rubble and residents began surveying the damage late Monday and early Tuesday in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, where a powerful tornado destroyed entire neighborhoods and left dozens dead.
