ANDERSON —
New Albany’s 9-10 softball team advanced to 2-1 in the state Little League tournament with a 12-5 victory over Indianapolis-based WDT on Monday in Anderson.
“The girls were very focused on their goals that we set before the game,” New Albany coach Darrell Thomas said. “It took a core of pitchers and a team effort to win this game.”
New Albany’s bats gave its pitchers a comfortable lead to start, and extened it with three runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth.
Alyssa Kraemer started for New Albany and allowed three runs on a single and four walks, but left with the lead, as New Albany staked her to a four-run lead in the top half of the first inning.
Alexis Williams pitched two innings in relief of Kraemer and allowed two runs, needing just 26 pitches to get through.
Camri Thomas mopped up for the New Albany pitchers, going the rest of the way without allowing a run to score.
New Albany faces Blackford today at 8 p.m.
• New Albany defeats Hessville: On Sunday, New Albany picked up its first victory in the state tournament with a 12-2 triumph over Hessville in five innings in pool play.
New Albany’s Bre Schoenfeld was the winning pitcher, tossing a two-hitter. She struck out 10, walked one and hit one batter. Schoenfeld helped herself at the plate with two hits, including a double.
Teammate Erin Bell supplied the biggest hit of the contest. With two out in the bottom of the fifth, she smacked a two-strike pitch to the right-field fence for a two-run inside-the-park home run.
Also in the six-run fifth, New Albany’s Alyssa Kraemer drove in a run by executing a suicide squeeze.
Bell and teammate Camri Thomas each had two hits. New Albany (1-1) collected 12 hits and stole four bases.
“We hit it to places where nobody was,” Coach Thomas said. “We hit the gaps. We had a lot of concentration and patience from our kids because their girl was throwing a lot of change-ups.”
