H.S. BOYS' BASKETBALL: Jeff runs over Owls 83-21 in HHC opener

Baker leads Devils with 22 points, six boards

JEFFERSONVILLE — The statistics were astounding from Jeffersonville’s 83-21 victory over Seymour in its Hoosier Hills Conference opener on Friday at William S. Johnson Arena.

Jeff (2-0) shot 57 percent from the floor (28-of-49), made six of its 13 3-point attempts and went 19-of-22 from the free-throw line, including knocking down its first 13 foul shots.

The Red Devils outrebounded Seymour 33-22 and turned the ball over just nine times.

“I thought our kids did a good job of turning down good shots for great shots,” Devils coach Chad Gilbert said.

And Jeff’s offensive stats were less impressive than its defensive stats.

Through three quarters — when most Red Devil regulars were pulled with a 70-15 lead — Jeff had forced 23 turnovers and allowed the Owls (0-4, 0-1 HHC) to attempt just 16 shots.

“We were relentless on our full-court pressure,” Gilbert said. “We made some pretty good reads, some pretty good traps and we did it without fouling.”

At the half, Seymour was 2-for-10 from the field, had 18 turnovers and hadn’t taken an attempt from the foul stripe. For the night, Seymour made just 6-of-29 from the field and 3-of-15 from beyond the 3-point arc. The Owls got to the foul line just eight times and made six. They had five more turnovers than they scored points.

“Games like that are tough to play in and they’re tough to coach in — on both sides,” Gilbert said. “It’s hard when you get beat like that and it’s hard when you beat someone like that because you still have to convince kids to play.”

Senior Darryl Baker followed up his 38-point performance in the Red Devils’ season-opening 65-64 win over Evansville Bosse, with game highs of 22 points and six rebounds. He scored 16 points in the first half, including an alley-oop dunk from Drew Ellis off of the opening tip.

Jeff opened the contest on a 12-0 run, including six points from Baker and four from Myles Harvey. By the end of the first quarter, the Devils led 21-4. Then they scored the first 16 points of the second quarter for a 37-4 advantage with 4:38 left in the half. Jeff led 45-7 at the break.

“It feels good to get off with a conference victory,” Gilbert said. “I thought the kids played hard.”

Senior Kortrell White added 11 points and four boards for Jeff, which plays the second of its HHC weekend tonight at Madison.

The Cubs are 2-2 after Friday’s 85-50 victory over South Dearborn.

“We’ll come back [Saturday] and try to beat Madison at Madison, which traditionally Jeff has trouble with. We’re just trying to get better every day.”
