GREENVILLE —
During the normal work week, Butch Krieger is an account manager for Plumbers Supply Company in Louisville.
But fans of tractor pulls, truck pulls and drag racing know the Greenville resident for another job he performs.
For 38 years, the 64-year-old Krieger has been a public-address announcer at drag races and tractor and truck pulls throughout the country, which includes Southern Indiana and Kentucky. He is probably best-known for being the longtime announcer for the Championship Tractor Pull at the annual National Farm Machinery Show at Freedom Hall in Louisville. Krieger will be announcing the popular pull for the 33rd straight year Feb. 15-18.
Krieger’s popularity and longevity have helped him earn a prestigious honor. This coming July, Krieger will be inducted into the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear Museum in Elizabethtown, Ky.
Krieger found out from his son Miles that he was chosen for induction into the Hall of Fame last week.
“I was very humbled,” the elder Krieger said about his upcoming entrance into the Hall. “I didn’t know if I was ever going to get in. I consider it quite an honor.”
Krieger was nominated for Hall of Fame induction two years ago. But Krieger did not get voted in because the Hall’s voters thought Krieger was not born in Kentucky. Hall of Fame rules state that each inductee must be born in the Bluegrass State.
Krieger, though, was born in Louisville. In fact, he lived there with his family for eight years before moving to Clarksville as a child. Once the voters discovered Krieger was born in Kentucky, he had a clear path to the Hall.
Krieger is one of 13 people who will go into the Hall of Fame in July, which includes one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers. Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and current Fox and Speed Channel NASCAR broadcaster Darrell Waltrip will join Krieger in the 2012 Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame class. Waltrip will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Sunday in Charlotte, N.C.
“I’m very honored to be in the same class with him,” Krieger said. “I think it’s great. I just hope he’ll be able to come (to the induction ceremony).”
Krieger’s upcoming Hall of Fame induction is not the only honor he has gotten recently. Last October during an awards ceremony in Indianapolis, he received the Lucas Oil Lifetime Achievement Award for being the longtime PA announcer for the nationwide Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League.
“That was a total surprise,” Krieger said. “You just never know when these things are going to happen.”
Krieger began his PA announcing career in 1974. As a member of the Greenville Fire Department, he helped organize a tractor pull in Greenville. When the pull needed an announcer, Krieger volunteered to perform those duties.
Krieger was hooked after that.
From 1980-1993, he was the track announcer at Ohio Valley Raceway, a drag strip southwest of Louisville. He has announced tractor pulls at the Kentucky State Fair and dirt late-model races at Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, Ky. Krieger is a member of the National Tractor Pull Association and a founding father of the Kentucky Tractor Pull Association.
Krieger’s passion for truck and tractor pulling is the main reason he has given so much support to this form of motorsports over the years.
“I’m just a big fan of truck and tractor pulling,” Krieger said. “I’ve always been a big fan. I get really excited about it. It’s an exciting sport. It’s like a big family. There is a lot of camaraderie among the people involved. There is just a tremendous amount of support from the people in the sport, which is what I like so much.”
Krieger has had some experience behind the wheel.
He was a drag racer at Ohio Valley Raceway for six years. Krieger also has participated in a tractor pull a few times. A couple of years ago during an event in Henry, Ill., he pulled a tractor to victory.
“I said I was done after that. I wanted to go out a winner,” Krieger said.
Krieger does not plan to end his announcing career anytime soon.
“As long as my voice lasts, I’ll continue to do it,” Krieger said. “There are some pulls that I’ve done for 25 years. As long as they want me back, I’ll keep on doing it.”
Krieger is not the only member of his family who announces tractor pulls. Miles Krieger and Butch’s other son, Jeremy, also have announced pulls in the past.
