TRACK: NA’s Parrish wins twice at regional

Bulldogs, Red Devils, Highlanders each to send several to state

BLOOMINGTON — Southern Indiana’s three biggest schools got some big-time performances at the Bloomington North Boys’ Track and Field Regional on Thursday.

Leading the pack was New Albany’s Jermaine Parrish, who won regional championships in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The Bulldogs’ top sprinter finished the 100 in 11.01, and followed that up with a time of 22.39 in the 200.

New Albany will also send its 400-meter relay team of Parrish, Scootie Middleton, Tuwan Payton and Ryan Bradley to the state meet after the group placed third in the event.

It was Jeffersonville that took first place in the 400 relay. The team of Austin Hines, Chase Scott, Isaiah Mack and Tyrell Dowdell turned in a time of 43.05 in the event. Floyd Central’s team of Matt Rue, Terrence Kennedy, Alex Boling and Gabriel Kennedy just missed qualifying for the state meet with a fourth-place finish.

Dowdell will also go to state to compete in the 400-meter run after finishing second at Bloomington with a time of 51.36, less than half a second behind Jesse Page of Bedford North Lawrence.

Jeffersonville got another second-place finish from Chase Scott, who will go to state to compete in the long jump after turning in a 21-foot, 5 1/4-inch leap. Scott was just two inches short of the jump by Kenton Helton of Linton.

Floyd Central will compete at state in two events. Codie Hamsley got second place in the discus with a throw of 176 feet, nine inches.

The Highlanders will also have a race to run in the 1,600-meter relay. Rue, Seth Jenkins, Hamsley and Austin Wirth finished second at regional, about a second behind Bedford North Lawrence.

Overall, Floyd Central placed third at the meet with 46 points. New Albany was fourth with 41 1/2, and Jeffersonville was just behind the Bulldogs with 38.

The state finals will be held on June 2 at Indiana University in Bloomington.
