> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Silver Creek’s girls’ basketball team held visiting Borden to two first-half field goals, and despite giving up 26 points in the third quarter, beat the Braves 56-41 on Thursday.

The Dragons jumped out to a 13-2 lead after one quarter and led 25-8 at intermission.

“We came out of the gates and did some nice things,” Silver Creek coach Scott Schoen said. “We forced them into a lot of turnovers and held them to two field goals in the first half.”

In the third quarter, Borden cut the Dragons’ lead to eight points with a 26-15 outburst.

“We played hard and had a good third quarter,” Borden coach Terry Rademacher said.

“The third quarter, they were a lot more aggressive than we were and they got hot,” Schoen said of the Braves. “They made some tough shots against us.”

In the fourth quarter, Creek was able to push the lead back to 20 points before settling for the 15-point win, its 10th of the season.

Again, it was the Dragon defense that keyed the spurt. Creek allowed just two fourth-quarter field goals.

“We got back to what we did [to get the early lead] in the fourth quarter,” Schoen said. “We feel with our defense that if we can get to 50 points, we always have a chance.”

Emily Clayton led the Dragons with 18 points, while teammate Alex Tinsley scored 12 and Alexis McFarland added 11.

“Those three, we have to have them score,” Schoen said. “A lot of their scoring comes from what they do on defense for us.”

Borden was led by Natalie Ruedinger, who had 10 points, Kristen Nestor’s eight and Leslie Beatty and Shelby Kirchgessner, who finished with seven apiece.

• Bulldogs fall despite Marcum’s 38: Senior Tanner Marcum scored a career-high 38 points, but it was not enough for New Albany in its 68-57 loss on Thursday night at Class 3A No. 5 Madison.

Marcum’s point total made her the seventh player in Bulldog girls’ basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She shot 14-of-16 from the free-throw line and made two 3-pointers. Marcum scored 18 of New Albany’s 26 fourth-quarter points.

“It’s huge. She’s just an amazing player,” Bulldogs’ coach Tammy Geron said about Marcum reaching the 1,000-point milestone. “We’re very blessed to have her in our program.”

Sophomore Brianne Nixon was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 10 points.

• Scottsburg gets by Clarksville: Scottsburg remained on top of the Mid-Southern Conference standings with a 72-35 victory over Clarksville on Thursday.

After holding a 30-22 halftime lead, the Warriorettes outscored Clarksville 28-8 in the third quarter to pull away.

“They started pressing and we didn’t adjust until it was a little too late,” Clarksville coach B.D. Ledbetter said. “We’re playing six [players] and we got a little tired, maybe.”

The Generals played some of their best basketball of the season in the first half while sticking close to the Class 3A No. 10 Warriorettes.

“We played really tough,” Ledbetter said. “We executed and we finished, which has been something that has plagued us this year.”

In the end, it was too much Katie Wampler, who finished with a game-high 34 points and now has 958 career points for Scottsburg.

“She knows what her strength is and she does it really well,” Ledbetter said of Wampler. “She made it really tough to stay with her.”

Abby Hurtgen had a team-high 13 points for Clarksville. Haley Jenkins added nine and Gabby Evans seven for the Generals.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

• Warriors snap four-game skid: Christian Academy broke a four-game losing streak on Thursday night with a 75-59 win at Crothersville. The game was a make-up for the teams’ postponed semifinal meeting in the McKee Munk Invitational last Saturday in Henryville.

Senior Aaron Hayes led the Warriors with a game-high 24 points, while teammate DeVonta King had 21.

Christian Academy took a 14-3 lead after the first quarter and was up 34-17 at halftime.
