H.S. ROUNDUP: Red Devils dominate Jeff Invitational

Highlander swimming, wrestling have successful weekend

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Jeffersonville’s boys and girls swimmers ran away with Jeffersonville Invitational titles on Saturday.

The Red Devil boys won all but two of the 11 events and beat runner-up Jennings County 205 points. The girls also won nine events and left second place Jennings County behind by nearly 120 points.

“This meet is always a good meet for us,” Jeff coach Keith Gast said. “We have just come out of Christmas training, the kids have become accustomed to the higher work loads we have been doing and we tend to swim pretty well. Today was no different.”

Timothy “T” Martin, Karlee Demsey and Elizabeth were four-time winners for the Red Devils. The trio each won two individual events and were members of a pair of winning relay teams.

Martin won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly, Browne won the 100 and 200 freestyle and Demsey captured the 200 individual medley and the 100 fly titles.

Amber Leininger won the 500 freestyle, breaking 5:40 for the first time. Freshman Michael Cain finished second in the 500 with a 5:04 and junior Max Weidekamp won the 200 IM in a lifetime best of 2:07.89.

The Jeff girls will battle for the Hoosier Hills Conference championship on Saturday.

“This was a good meet for us as we head into HHC week for the girls,” Gast said. “I think we finalized some of the swims we will use this weekend.”

• FC sweeps Owls: Floyd Central swept Seymour on Saturday with the girls beating the Owls 108-77 and the boys dominating 129-56.

The Highlanders and the Owls are among the favorites in Saturday’s Hoosier Hills Conference girls’ meet. Floyd won seven of the 12 events and won comfortably with superior depth.

Meg Taylor won four events for the Highlanders. She was victorious in the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle and was a member of both of Floyd’s winning freestyle relay teams. Maryn Meldrum won three events, including the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. She also teamed with Taylor in the 200 free relay.

The Highlander boys won 11 of the 12 races, led by Oscar Anderson, Kyle Crater and Eli Anderson, who each won four events. Brendon Smith won the 100 butterfly and was on two victorious relay teams.



WRESTLING

• Highlanders second at Corydon: Floyd Central finished second at Corydon Central’s Old Capitol Classic on Saturday, just five points behind champion Zionsville.

Terrence Kennedy, Tre Marler, John Meldrum, Chase Herron and Nick Ottersbach all won championships for the Highlanders. Ian Bagwell, Cory Troutman and Michael Kruer, who was unseeded, finished second. Lance Youtsey and Sean Brown — also unseeded — placed third and Brennan Banet was fourth in his weight class.

On Friday, the Highlanders defeated Charlestown 60-15. Tyler Crowl, Kennedy, Marler, Troutman, Kruer, Meldrum, Herron, Bagwell, Youtsey, Banet and Ottersbach all defeated their Pirate counterparts.

NEXT: Floyd Central at HHC championship, Saturday at Seymour.
