For the first time since 1991, New Albany swept its own tennis invitational on Saturday.
All three of the Bulldogs’ singles players and both of its doubles teams earned titles in the eight-team tournament.
“The kids all came though and played well,” New Albany coach Bob Dusch said. “When you sweep a meet like this, you have to be happy.”
Dusch was particularly happy with the play of No. 3 singles player Hayden Sizemore. In a 4-1 win over Pekin Eastern on Thursday, Simore’s loss to Drew Logus was New Albany’s only defeat. On Saturday, however, Sizemore beat Logue in straight sets — 6-4 in each set — to earn the championship.
“I was very pleased with Sizemore,” Dusch praised. “He came though for us in the final tonight.”
Alex Stewart — after a tough 7-5, 7-6 (8) semifinal win over Austin’s Travis Pate — won the No. 1 singles title with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Providence’s Pete Andres.
At No. 2 singles, Kyle Landrum beat Scottsburg’s Shea Miles, 6-3 and 6-4.
Both New Albany doubles teams had an easy road to the championship and won easily in the title match. Luke Garmon and Christian Meyer defeated Providence’s Nick Finn and Andrew Jerdonek, 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Robby Erskine and Shuaib Mirani won the No. 2 doubles title with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Brandon Mullins and Mitch Stagnolia of Austin, 6-2 and 6-0.
• Highlanders third at North Central: Floyd Central finished third in its division at the North Central Tournament Saturday.
The Highlanders finished a point behind runner-up Bloomington South. Terre Haute South easily won the division.
The Highlander No. 1 doubles team of Jarrett Oldham and Ryan Smith earned the tournament championship. Oldham and Smith defeated Dan Myers and Donnie Snyder of Heritage Chrsitian, 6-1, 5-7 and 10-8 in the super tiebreaker, to earn the title.
Alex Martin finished third at No. 2 doubles. Andrew Nuguyen at No. 3 singles, and Dylan Evanczyk and Drew Hussong at No. 2 doubles, each finished fifth.
VOLLEYBALL
• Mustangs finish second at Madison Invite: New Washington lost a three-set match — 18-25, 25-12, 15-11 — to Southwestern in Saturday’s Madison Invitational championship game.
New Washington, which went 2-2 on the day, had previously beaten Borden and Henryville. Despite a loss to South Dearborn, the Mustangs earned their spot in the championship game thanks to a Henryville win over the Knights.
“We knew the competition would be something we wanted to see,” Mustang coach Gary Graham said. “At times, we certainly played a lot better than we have. There was a lineup or two that showed us where we are and where we want to be.”
Carolina Ricks had 44 kills and Casey Johnson had 46 assists to lead New Wash.
“Our serving picked up a little bit,” Graham said. “That was nice to see, too.”
Graham said the win over Henryville gives little indication which team is the favorite in the Southern Athletic Conference.
“We play our conference matches a little later on, which is the way we like it,” Graham said. “We played our best (against Henryville) that we have all year. They caught us at the wrong time. It was a nice win for us, but they’re going to want revenge when we go there (on Sept. 14).”
New Wash hosts Madison on Tuesday.
• Henryville third at Madison: After losing to New Washington, Henryville recovered to finish third at Madison with a 25-22, 18-25, 25-23 win over South Ripley in the consolation match.
"We didn’t play that well overall today,” Henryville coach Shallon Hill admitted. “No part of our game was close to outstanding. We definitely have some weaknesses to work on.”
Part of the problem was another injury to Cheyenne Mayfield. Mayfield injured her hand in teh first match of the day.
“We just got her back from health issues and now she may have a broken knuckle,” Hill said. “She can't get a break.”
Brittany Pierce and Erika Robertson led the Hornets with 24 and 22 kills, respectively.”
Henryville goes to Scottsburg on Tuesday.
BOYS’ SOCCER
• Jeff beats CAI with second-half outburst: Jeffersonville’s boys’ soccer team turned a tightly-contested match into a blowout over Christian Academy of Indiana with four late goals.
Just second before halftime, Jeff sophomore Skyler Davis put a Vincent Straight corner kick into the back of the net to give the Red Devils a 2-1 lead that it never relinquished.
Midway through the second half, Jeff began to pour it on. Davis was fouled in the box, and the Devils were given a penalty kick. Straight buried the shot for a 3-1 lead.
Brian Fishcer made it 4-1 before Davis scored his second goal on an assist from Lucas Rigsby. Rigsby capped the scoring with a goal of his own on a cross from Gavin Leavell.
Jeff broke on top early iwth a Straight goal past three defenders, but the Warriors quickly responded to tie the equalize before Jeff’s outburst.
Jeff will host Hoosier Hills Conference rival Seymour on Tuesday. On the same night, Christian Academy hosts Silver Creek.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
• Providence beats Presentation, 10-0: Providence earned a 10-0 win over Presentation Academy (Ky.) on Saturday.
Casey Marlin scored three goals and had two assists, and Kasey Wallace added two goals for the Pioneers, who led 9-0 at the half.
Katelyn Koopman had a goal and two assists, and Cristian May-Boquiren added a goal and assists. Hadley Anderson, Leah Mattingly and Kayhla Meisner all had goals. Rachel Wells had two assists, and Erin Duncan, Miriam Snyder had assists apiece.
Providence has a week off before hosting Salem next Saturday.
• Bulldogs win HHC match: New Albany defeated visiting Bedford North Lawrence 2-1 on Saturday with goals from Kameron Cole and Morgan Huthchinson.
Hutchinson’s goal was assisted by Kelsey Graeter.
The Bulldogs travel to Corydon Central on Tuesday for their next outing.
