H.S. ROUNDUP: Red Devils reach semis of HHC Tourney with win over Seymour

New Albany falls to Columbus East

SEYMOUR — The Jeffersonville girls’ tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament on Tuesday with a 5-0 first-round victory at Seymour. The match got postponed on Monday because of rain.

The Red Devils won three matches in three sets to secure the sweep. At No. 2 singles, Jeff’s Emily Lewis outlasted Marly Vehslage, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. At three singles, Larissa Neville rallied to defeat Ally Brock, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. At No. 2 doubles, the Red Devil team of Rachel Williams and Kaitlin Wunsch beat Emily Rudge and Matey Warren, 6-7(7-5), 6-2, 6-2.

Jeff’s Julianna Jenks prevailed at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3. The Red Devils’ No. 1 doubles team of Morgan Reilly and Macy Lancaster won 6-1, 6-1.

Jeff hosts third-ranked Floyd Central in today’s HHC Tournament semifinals.

• Columbus East edges New Albany: Visiting Columbus East knocked New Albany out of the Hoosier Hills Conference Girls’ Tennis Tournament with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday.

The Olympians needed three sets to win in each of the two doubles matches.

At one doubles, Lauren Champion and Zlexa Husmann downed Emily Hoffer and Kaithlyn Mooney, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Pooja Pandita and Amanda Hashimato turned back New Albany’s Lauren Hoffer and Chandni Bhimani, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5).

The third New Albany loss came at No. 1 singles, where Maddy Bellew fell in short order to Ashlee Hasson, 6-3, 6-1.

Erin Kanii and Marin Kanii got the two New Albany points at two and three singles, respectively.

New Albany will travel to the winner of the Madison-Jennings County quarterfinal match today.

• Charlestown toughs out win over New Washington: Charlestown managed to get a 4-1 victory over Greater Clark rival New Washington on Tuesday.

The Pirates swept the singles positions. Sabine Higazy defeated Courtney Amick, 6-2, 7-5. Sarah Embry downed Tiffanie Brison, 6-2, 6-2, while Sarah Trotter turned back Melanie Dieterlan, 6-3, 6-3.

“We were fortunate to get a win today over one of our local rival schools. The second sets were closer than even the scores looked,” Charlestown coach Chris Ryan said.

Bailey Masingo and Hayley Trinkle got the fourth Charlestown point at doubles two, where they defeated Amanda Kemp and Christen Walker, 6-1, 6-4.

The Mustangs’ sole win came courtesy of Alex Seals and Ashley Johnson, who teamed to defeated Emily Shaw and Erica Broady, 6-4, 6-4.

“New Washington is a very young team, in their singles especially, so they will be tough to play over the next couple of season,” Ryan added.

Charlestown travels to Corydon Central on Thursday. New Washington travels to Scottsburg today.



SOFTBALL

• Red Devils fall in first round of HHC: Visiting Jeff saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end in a 5-3 loss at Jennings County in the first round of the HHC Tournament. Rain forced the postponement of the game on Monday.

The Red Devils struggled on defense, committing six errors. Jeff pitcher Kayla Poppe suffered the loss, dropping her record to 9-3.

“We committed more errors tonight than we have committed in the last six or seven games. That’s what really lost us the game,” Red Devil head coach Jodi Bradley said. “When we had runners on, we didn’t produce.”

Jeff (16-5) visits Madison today in the loser’s bracket semifinals.

• Henryville goose-egged: Henryville lost to Salem at home on Tuesday, 4-0.

The Hornets mustered only two hits in the contest. Meanwhile, the defense did losing pitcher Natalie Basham few favors with five errors committed.

The Hornets (10-9) play in the Silver Creek tournament on Saturday.

• Dragons blank Brownstown: Host Silver Creek moved into a second-place tie in the Mid-Southern Conference with a 4-0 victory over Brownstown.

The Dragons’ Shayla Cravens was the winning pitcher. She tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out six and walking three.

Silver Creek’s Casie Toby went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Teammate McKenzie Bush was 2-for-3.

The Dragons (15-6, 7-2 MSC) will host Salem on Thursday.

• Generals defeat Austin: Starting pitcher Hannah Heintzman gave up just five hits to lead visiting Clarksville past Austin, 11-1. Heintzman went the distance as she gave up one earned run, struck out nine and walked six.

“She threw pretty well. It took us awhile to get on track,” Generals’ head coach Tim Hauber said.

Clarksville’s Kayla Wallace was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Teammate Ali Sparkman went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, while the Generals’ Myranda Ridenour was 2-for-4. Clarksville’s Kierstin Hall smacked a two-run home run in the sixth.

Clarksville (10-8, 3-4 MSC) hosts Henryville today.



BASEBALL

• Mustangs edge Eastern: Host New Washington rallied from a 9-7 deficit with two runs in the fourth and two in the sixth in an 11-10 win over Eastern.

The Mustangs’ Kyle Morgan, Dustin Cooper and Cody Rager each had a pair of hits. Austin Roberts smacked a three-run homer with one out in a five-run first inning for New Washington (7-8).

Morgan was the winning pitcher. He pitched all seven innings, yielding 10 runs (six earned) on 13 hits. Morgan struck out six and walked five.

“We hit the ball real well. We hit the ball solid,” Mustangs’ coach Bill Siewert said. “We played real good.”

New Washington will host Trinity Lutheran in a doubleheader on its Senior Day on Saturday.



BOYS’ GOLF

• Floyd Central awes at Shadowood: Floyd Central had all five of its players post sub-40 scores in a triangular meet victory over Seymour and Jennings County at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour on Tuesday.

The Highlanders were led by Austin Peckham, who earned a share of the medalist honors with an even-par 36.

Also for Floyd Central, Daniel Shepard and Devin Jenkins each posted 37s, Connor Welch shot a 38 and Jack Sparrow carded a 39.

Floyd Central meets Zionsville at Trophy Club Golf Course on Saturday.
