H.S. TRACK: YOUTH MOVEMENT

Floyd Central girls win HHC meet behind underclassmen

FLOYDS KNOBS — The Floyd Central girls’ track team edged Columbus East to win the Hoosier Hills Conference Championship Track Meet at Ron Weigleb Stadium on Tuesday.

The Highlanders scored 114.5 points, ahead of the Olympians’ 104 and Seymour’s 103.

The Highlanders got it done with depth, largely using younger athletes to rack up points. The Highlanders got top-eight finishes in eight of the meet’s 16 events.

Floyd Central got first-place finishes in three events, all toward the end of the meet. The Highlander 1,600-meter relay team of Lucy Brown, Rachel Denison, Sharon Jecker — all sophomores — and junior Tori Kingsley were first across the line in 4:16.90, more than five seconds better than second-place Seymour in the event.

Individually, junior Leah Wolf edged Columbus East’s Sarah Loesch to pick up a win in the discus throw, while sophomore Rachael Kavgazoff cleared 9 feet to win the pole vault, 6 inches ahead of Jaclyn Capes of Jennings County. Floyd junior Abby Marguet tied for seventh in the event.

Floyd Central’s team of Jamie Bierman, Lacy Emerson, Alyssa Moore and senior Jamie Wallace placed second in the 3,200 relay behind New Albany’s victorious team of Phoebe Bauer, Chelsey Boutin, Rachel Bowden and Rose Kaforski.

New Albany took fourth overall at the meet with a score of 79.5. The Bulldogs also got a first-place finish in the 400 relay, run by Jayla Bethel, Lauren Kessinger, Reid Milam and Ryan Milam.

Bauer got another first-place finish for the Bulldogs in the 3,200, where she blew away the pack with a time of 12:10.50, more than 27 seconds ahead of the next finisher.

Jeffersonville finished fifth with a score of 67 points, and had perhaps the meet’s most successful individual performance in LaVada Roberson, who won two events and placed second in another. Roberson is the HHC champion in the 200 dash (26.96) and the long jump (16-5 1/2). She placed second in the 100 dash behind fellow Red Devil Chelsea Lewis, who placed second in the 200.

Jeffersonville’s Taylor Hines got her team another HHC championship with a time of 2:27.84 in the 800.
