H.S. FOOTBALL: Charlestown throttles MSC rival Brownstown Central, 41-3

SEYMOUR — Brownstown failed to capitalize on some early opportunities as Charlestown came out sluggish before kicking it into gear in a 41-3 victory for the Pirates over the Braves at Dutch Reis Field.

The win for Charlestown (2-0, 1-0 Mid-Southern Conference) gives them by far the upper hand in the conference race with Corydon still looked at as a contender.

Senior running back Seth McCutchen led the Pirates with 218 yards on 15 carries, scoring a touchdown on a 21-yard run in the second quarter.

Quarterback Aaron Daniel completed 9-of-16 passes for 141 yards with touchdown passes of 26 yards to Tyler Odle and nine yards to Wesley Sexton. Daniel also gained 176 yards on 17 carries scoring on touchdown runs of 5, 60 and 47 yards.

Sexton caught for passes for 72 yards while Odle had three catches for 54 yards.

And the Charlestown defense stepped up to the challenge as they kept the Braves out of the end zone and sacked Brownstown quarterback Clay Brown six times while having a total of 17 tackles for loss.

“We were sluggish coming out for a big game, but the defense got us some stops and turned things around,” Charlestown coach Jason Hawkins said. “Our offensive line allowed us to run the ball well tonight. Once we settled down we played pretty good. Seth and Aaron both did a great job tonight”

Charlestown fumbled the ball away on their first series leading to the Braves only score of the game — a 22-yard field goal by Nick Stahl. Brownstown recovered the onside kick, leading to another field goal attempt, this time Stahl missed from 33 yards.

Charlestown turned the ball over on downs on their next series as Daniel was sacked on fourth-and-5 from the Braves 9. Brownstown fumbled the ball away three plays later. Two plays later, Daniel scored from five yards out and the rout was on.

“We talked before the game about playing with emotion on every play,” Hawkins said. “Our line, linebackers, the entire defense did that tonight.”

On defense Hawkins praised the play of Matt Myers, Jake Harper, Desmond Wiley, Jimmy Garcia, Adam Hoff and Darren Taylor.

How did Hawkins explain his team’s vast improvement in from one week to the next? And against a far superior opponent?

“I saw this coming in practice,” Hawkins said. “If we improve as much in the coming weeks as we did this week, we’ll be pretty good.”

Next week, the Pirates will continue MSC play as they travels to Clarksville to face a Generals team that is also 1-0 in league play after a 42-20 win at Eastern on Friday.
