HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Red Devils rebound with 8-1 victory at Corydon

Jeff uses three pitchers to get ninth win of 2012

CORYDON — The Jeffersonville softball team bounced back from a loss to Louisville Ballard by defeating host Corydon on Friday, 8-1.

The Red Devils’ Courtney Shepherd and Kayleigh Thomas each collected two hits.

Jeff starting pitcher Kayla Poppe got the victory. In a three-inning stint, she allowed no runs on one hit with three strikeouts and one walk. Poppe upped her record to 5-2.

Thomas and Emily Gray each pitched two innings of relief, as they combined to yield one run on five hits.

“We came off a loss to Ballard and played a really good game today,” Red Devils’ head coach Jodi Bradley said. “Our bats are starting to come around.”

Jeff (9-4) plays a split doubleheader at Bloomington North and Bloomington South today.



GIRLS’ TENNIS

• Braves blank Clarksville: Host Borden won four matches in straight sets to stay undefeated in a 5-0 victory over Clarksville.

Winning in straight sets for Borden were Erin Mikel at No. 1 singles, Jessie Davidson at No. 3 singles, Erika Frascella and Sarah Hurst at No. 1 doubles and Morgan Mast and Paige Kruer at No. 2 doubles.

Braves’ senior Allison Rademacher won the only three-set match of the day, downing the Generals’ Chloe Stephens at No. 2 singles 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

“We haven’t been shut out (this season) until now,” Clarksville head coach Steve Welcher said. “They were better today than us at all positions, expect two singles where Chloe came up a little short. The lineup change didn’t help us any either. They’re a very good team.”

Borden (9-0) will host Lanesville on Tuesday. Clarksville will entertain Corydon on Monday.



BOYS’ TRACK

• Braves win tri-meet over SAC rivals: On Thursday, Borden won a triangular meet against Southern Athletic Conference rivals Henryville and New Washington, scoring 73 points. The host Hornets finished second with 54 points and the Mustangs were third with 33.

Three Braves each won two individual events. Junior Michael Lynch was first in the pole vault (11 feet) and 110-meter hurdles (19.97 seconds). Sophomore George Tipker prevailed in the 100 (12.4) and 200 dashes (24.5). Junior Brian Eurton won the 800 (2:14) and 1,600 (4:52).

Borden won all three relay races. The 400 relay team of Michael Wright, Brady Knight, Hayden Casey and Roerk Green prevailed in a time of 49.1 seconds. The victorious 1,600 relay squad of Tipker, Casey, Eurton and Gavin Tipker posted a time of 3:52. The 3,200 relay team of Gavin Tipker, George Tipker, Jared Rafferty and Shane Little won in 9:46.

No individual results for Henryville and New Washington were provided at press time.

All three teams will return to action on Monday. Borden will host West Washington and Rock Creek Community Academy. The Hornets and the Mustangs will compete in a quadrangular meet at Austin.
