HS ROUNDUP: Clarksville caps amazing comeback

Down 18, Generals prevail on road

Junior Jessica Johnson had a career-high 26 points, including a game-winning basket with three seconds remaining to help Clarksville to a 57-55 victory over host Madison Shawe on Monday.

The Generals (3-4), who were playing without starters Alex Spainhour and Desire Powell, fell behind 34-16 midway through the second quarter but charged back behind Johnson and senior guard Ashton Lukes — who had 18 points.

“We got down and I had to call a time out and tell them how it was,” said Clarksville coach Troy Mitchell. “They responded. I’ve been coaching 13 years and I don’t think we’ve had a team come back like this. When we were down, we turned up the pressure and pace and forced them into turnovers.”

The Generals will play host to Brownstown Saturday.

• Highlanders drop HHC opener: The Floyd Central girls’ basketball team lost their second close game of the season, falling 52-51 at Seymour in the Hoosier Hills Conference opener for both teams.

The Highlanders (1-2) led 29-26 at halftime in a game that was tight throughout. Seymour (2-0) outscored Floyd 15-10 in the third quarter and held on for the victory.

“I thought both teams played well,” Floyd Central assistant coach Tammy Geron said. “Defensively, we just gave up some baskets that we shouldn’t have given up.”

Emily Batliner led the Highlanders with 14 points. Floyd Central will visit Madison on Nov. 28.



Wrestling

• Jeff fourth in Capital City: On Saturday, Jeffersonville posted its highest finish in the three years it has competed in the Capital City Classic in Indianapolis. The Red Devils placed fourth with 135 1/2 points.

Jeff senior Justin Cunningham because the first Red Devil wrestler to win a Capitol City championship. In the 189-pound final, Cunningham, who was the third seed, defeated Beech Grove’s Thomas Logan by a 5-3 decision.

At 140, Jeff senior Rob Ferguson placed third after beating Beech Grove’s Josh Ramage, 6-2. Teammates Caleb Visser (119), Brett Walker (125) and Coty Hendricks (145) each finished fourth.

“It was a good day in all for our program,” said Red Devil head coach Danny Struck, whose team finished in last place in this tournament in 2004. “Three years ago, we signed up for this tourney and a few people told us we were crazy and that we weren’t ready. Fourth is where I thought we would be. It is not where we want to be yet though.”

Jeff will compete in the Turkey Classic at Mt. Vernon (Posey) this coming Saturday.
