The New Washington boys’ tennis team claimed victories at all three singles spots to down host Charlestown on Wednesday, 3-2.
Senior Drake Krohn led the Mustangs (6-1) with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Chris Braun at No. 1 singles. At two singles, senior Tarren Clapp downed the Pirates’ Andrew Gregory, 6-0, 6-3. Winning at No. 3 singles was New Washington’s Chad McKinley, who defeated freshman Ben Delaney 6-1, 7-5.
“I commend all of our singles spots because they carried us today,” Mustangs’ head coach Wayne Davis said. “We don’t always play pretty, but we do seem t o play determined and I’ll take that. I like our direction, but we simply have to stay focused with no letdowns. It’s really as simple as that.”
Charlestown prevailed at both doubles spots. At the No. 1 position, seniors Jake Atkins and Jacob Delaney beat the New Washington tandem of Matt Renschler and Devin Freels, 6-2, 6-4. At two doubles, the Pirates’ Kameron and Kevin Heil upended Jacob Ramer and Daniel Hobson, 6-1, 7-5.
Both teams are on the road today. The Mustangs visit South Central and Charlestown goes to Pekin Eastern.
• Providence sweeps Scottsburg: Providence bounced back from Tuesday’s 5-0 loss to No. 10 Jeffersonville by sweeping Scottsburg at Community Park in New Albany, 5-0.
The closest match of the day happened at No. 2 doubles, where the Pioneers’ Andrew Jerdonek and Joe Solis prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Providence’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Nick Finn and Daniel Becht prevailed 6-0, 6-1.
Winning in singles action for the Pioneers (3-3) were Pete Andres, Brenden Popson and Nolan Carrico.
“I challenged the boys after their loss on Tuesday,” Providence coach Scott Gurgol said. “I told them that only one player has been playing up to his
ability. The boys gave me some of their ideas and we came up with a
lineup which worked today. Our doubles had better teamwork and covered
the court better. Each player had more energy and aggressiveness. We played like we wanted to win, and now we have some momentum to carry forward.”
The Pioneers will play in the Columbus North Invitational Saturday.
GIRLS’ GOLF
• Hornets defeat Clarksville in dual meet: Four Henryville players shot in the 40s in a dual-meet win over Clarksville on the Links Nine course at Hidden Creek Golf Club. The Hornets fired a 190, while the Generals fielded an incomplete team.
Katie Cleveland led the Hornets with a 46. Teammate Carissa Embry and Natalie Bobay each shot a 48 and Jenna Harrell chipped in a 49. Bobay’s 48 was a personal-best score.
Also for Henryville, Sara Henson carded a 57 and Makenzi Franz shot a 59.
“With Sara struggling a little bit, that was big for us,” Henryville head coach Robin Embry said about Bobay’s score. “Overall, the kids played pretty well. We all seem to be struggling a little with our putting. We had some three-putts that we didn’t want to see.”
Clarksville sophomore Quincy Cooper earned medalist honors with an even-par 35. Teammate Kelsey Hall shot a 61 and Ariel Oehler added a 66.
The Hornets will play Jeffersonville and Silver Creek at the Jeff Elks next Wednesday. The Generals will play in the Mid-Southern Conference meet on Saturday at Old Capital Golf Club in Corydon.
BOYS’ SOCCER
• Jeff downs Heritage Hills: On Tuesday, host Jeff blanked Heritage Hills, 5-0.
The Red Devils’ Jordan Vejar and Vincent Straight each kicked in two goals. Teammate Roberto Martinez scored one.
Jeff’s Lucas Rigsby dished out three assists, while Vejar and teammate Eric Martinez each chipped in one.
The Red Devils visit Trinity Lutheran today.
VOLLEYBALL
• Brumit leads Devils on Tuesday: In Jeffersonville’s three-set loss on Tuesday at Silver Creek, Avery Brumit paced the Red Devils with 11 kills and teammate Courtney Applegate chipped in four.
Jeff’s Rachel Applegate had 11 assists and five digs, while teammate Macauley Murphy made five digs.
“Our girls played with a lot of heart and I commend them on that,” Red Devils’ head coach Tim Cox said. “Silver Creek has a very good team and I still have to remember that our team is still very young and still learning. We should improve off of matches like this.”
Jeff visits Clarksville today.
