SELLERSBURG —
The Silver Creek Dragons in just their second season of varsity football have been on the short end of some blowout games including losses this season of 70-27 to Corydon and 70-13 to Charlestown.
So it had to be somewhat delightful to the Dragon faithful on Senior Night that watched Silver Creek build a 48-0 halftime lead on Crawford County as running back Layne Taylor rushed for 202 yards on just eight carries to earn him and a majority of his first-string teammates a second-half rest, thus allowing coach Mike Donahue a chance to give his underclassmen some varsity experience heading into sectional play next week.
Youth. Let’s just say they can make things interesting as Crwaford County cut the lead to 48-30 with 11 minutes left before the starters came to the rescue for a 69-30 win, the third for the Dragons this season in the before mentioned just their second season of varsity football.
After the combination of Seth Fell and B.J. Mahoney combined for their third touchdown of the second half, Silver Creek coach Donahue kept Taylor on the bench but went back to starting quarterback Brooks Howell.
Howell immediately responded om first down with a 56 yard touchdown pass to Austin Hastings. That combination had also combined on a scoring pass of 57 yards on the games first play.
Romney Allen and Eli Jones then added touchdowns on runs of 1 and 22 yards to seal it.
Taylor’s first half antics included touchdown runs of 27, 82 and 41 yards. Howell, who had a near perfect game in completing 7-of-8 passes for 258 yards also threw a toiuchdown pass of 3 yards to Adam Wilder. Ben Davis had a touchdown run of 2 yards and Zach Reynolds has a 22 yard interception return for a score.
For Silver Creek (3-6), Drew Sherrow caught 3 passes for 106 yards. Hastings totaled 113 yards on the two touchdown passes.
Mahoney started the game at quarterback for Crawford County (0-9) completing just 3-of-13 passes with three interceptions for 19 yards. Fell took over after halftime, completing 4-of-12 passes with one interception for 101 yards- three of the completions were touchdowns to Mahoney who finished with 101 yards receiving.
“Our varsity did what they had to do tonight,” Donahue said. “Layne had a great game, we wanted to get him over 1000 yards. He needed 85 so we did that.”
Donahue also praised the 12 seniors on his roster for their season.
“Thank You”. he said. “Thank You for raising the bar for the guys that follow and will have to step it up.”
Silver Creek will begin sectional play next week with a trip to Corydon.
