JEFFERSONVILLE —
Silver Creek scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to force a 10-0 win over New Albany No. 1 on Thursday at the District 5 Little League Tournament.
The victory improved Silver Creek to 2-0 overall heading into a showdown against Jeff/GRC on Saturday night at Woerhle Fields.
Pitchers Hannah Wolford and Lexie McAfee combined on the shutout win for Creek. Wolford tossed two innings before being relieved by McAfee, who tossed the final three.
“We’re confident, we’re proud of how the girls have played so far,” said Creek coach Charley Wolford. “We still need to work on hitting the ball, but we’ve played pretty well so far.”
Creek faces Jeff Saturday at 8 p.m.
• NA No. 2 downs HYR: New Albany No. 2 earned its second victory in two days, beating HYR in the opening game, 14-12.
The win moved New Albany to 2-0 in the tournament.
11-12 baseball
Ricky West and Luke Eskins both smacked solo home runs and West retired all 18 batters he faced on the mound to help New Albany beat HYR, 9-0.
West smashed the first pitch of the game deep to give New Albany a 1-0 advantage. Eskins struck in the third with his homer, making it 7-0.
West struck out 13 batters, giving him 29 in two games pitched. He has yet to allow a hit. New Albany moved to 3-0 as a team entering a pool play game against Charlestown on Saturday.
9-10 baseball
Gerrin Moore, Timmy Borden and Bailey Falkenstein combined on a complete-game one hitter, lifting Jeff/GRC to a 16-0 victory over Clarksville in pool play.
Jeff started the game with 10 runs in the top of the first as it moved to 2-1 overall in tourney play.
“The pitching was good,” said Jeff/GRC coach Brent Falkenstein. “We threw the ball pretty well tonight and at this level it makes a huge difference.”
13-14 baseball
Jeff/GRC, comprised largely of the group that represented the league at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. two summers ago, defeated New Albany in pool play, 4-1.
The win moved Jeff to 3-0 overall in pool play.
