> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
Taylor Patty recorded a hat trick to lead the Floyd Central girls’ soccer team to an 8-0 victory over Vincennes Lincoln in its opener of the Hoosier Cup in Bloomington.
Along with Patty’s three goals, five other players scored for the Highlanders. They were Lauren Wyatt, Cassie Holland, Kady O’Farrell, Lauren Haley and Cassie Fakai.
All eight of Floyd’s goals were assisted. Haley and teammate Emily Foster each had two assists. Also recording assists for the Highlanders were O’Farrell, Holland, Ali Host and Ellie Stewart.
Floyd dominated shots on goal, outshooting the Alices 24-2. Fakai made two saves. The Highlanders continue play in the round-robin tournament today with matches against Christian Academy of Indiana and Evansville North.
“It was a good warm-up. It was great to see eight assists,” Floyd head coach Lewie Stevens said.
GIRLS' GOLF
• The Henryville girls’ golf team downed West Clark rival Borden in an 18-hole dual meet on Friday at Hidden Creek Golf Club, 370-439.
Hornet senior Carissa Embry earned medalist honors with an 84. Teammate Katie Cleveland fired a 90, while Jenna Harrell chipped in a 94. Sara Henson rounded out the Henryville scoring with a 102.
“All the kids played better,” Hornet head coach Robin Embry said. “We’re getting more consistent. I was pleased with everyone’s score. We just need to keep at it. It was good for us to play 18 holes.”
Brittany Newton paced Borden with an 89. Rounding out the scoring for the Braves were Carson Casey with a 112, Rachel Babiak with a 114 and Nikki Carter with a 124.
Henryville will return to the links on Wednesday in a triangular meet against Christian Academy of Indiana and Clarksville. Borden will visit Springs Valley on Thursday.
BOYS’ TENNIS
• Borden defeats South Central, 4-1: Both of Borden’s doubles teams pulled out victories to lead their team to a 4-1 victory at South Central.
The Braves’ Luke Calfee and Matt Smith won at No. 1 doubles, while teammates Clint Morris and Jared Sanders won in three sets at two doubles.
Borden’s Brandon Beam defeated Matt Fox at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-3. At two singles, Kyle Craig beat the Rebels’ Josh Volstedt, 6-4, 6-0.
South Central’s lone point came at No. 3 singles, as Matt Cox downed the Braves’ Matt Smith, 6-4, 6-2.
“The players bounced back from the loss (on Thursday to New Albany),” Borden coach Fin Burton said. “Early in the match, I thought we were going to get completely swept off the court. Every match except for two singles we were down by a significant amount. This match was able to show some of the character that the players have started to develop. The players seemed to have a little trouble gauging the wind today. I asked them to play hard and have fun. Of course, winning helps you out in the fun part.”
The Braves will host Paoli next Thursday.
CROSS COUNTRY
• Bauer wins North Harrison Invitational: New Albany sophomore Phoebe Bauer beat 130 runners to the finish line to claim the North Harrison Invitational girls’ title on Thursday.
Bauer completed the 5-kilometer course in a time of 19:44. New Albany finished eighth overall.
Floyd Central finished second as a team. It was 12 points behind champion Bedford North Lawrence. Alyssa Moore and Hannah Keehn both had top-10 finishes. Moore was sixth in 20:49, and Keehn placed ninth in 21:06. Katie Perkins finished 19th in 22:08.
Connie Chan paced Jeffersonville with a third-place finish. The Red Devils were 14th as a team.
• Floyd Central boys fourth at North Harrison Invite: The Floyd Central boys’ team finished fourth at the North Harrison Invite.
The Highlanders, who finished behind host North Harrison, Bedford North Lawrence and Perry Central, were led by Logan Kell and Cory Portwood, who finished 10th and 11th, respectively. Chris Pepin was 14th.
Borden finished eighth, led by eighth-place finisher Hunter Williams.
Jared Santana led the 13th-place New Albany team with a 21st-place finish.
Jeffersonville, which finished 18th, was led by Conner Richardson in 55th place.
“We still don’t have a real leader on this team,” Jeff coach Mark Felix said. “We are very young and the kids are coming along, but we are a long way from being contenders for anything. I don’t know that anyone on this team is willing to step up and take the role of a true team captain. Fortunately, some of the new kids seem hungry so that makes the future look promising.”
Charlestown’s Kie Sutherland placed 48th, earning his career-best time of 18:07. Sutherland shaved 33 seconds off of his previous-best time and Sutherland now ranks 27th in the all-time Charlestown record book.
Kaleb Weaver’s 57th-place finish paced Christian Academy of Indiana.
VOLLEYBALL
• Pioneers beat Corydon in straight sets: Providence improved to 5-4 with a 25-13, 25-22, 25-15 straight-set victory over Corydon Central on Thursday.
Ashley Ricks led Providence with 15 kills, three blocks and 13 service points. Mary Beth Mattingly had eight kills and two blocks for the Pioneers.
Freshman setter Abby Spitznagel led the Pioneers with 37 assists, and Kylie Flanagan had a team-best nine digs. Bryana Rake led Providence with 18 service points.
“Our serve reception is improving with each match,” Providence coach Terri Purichia said. “The competition that we are facing in this early portion of our schedule can only help us develop and grow as a team. Although we would love to have a few more wins under our belts at this point, our team continues to keep a positive outlook on the improvements we are making and is staying focused on our overall development.”
The Pioneers host the Early Bird Tournament today.
• Braves upend South Central: Erin Mikel spiked 18 kills to lead Borden past host South Central, 25-6, 25-12, 25-9.
Also for the Braves (6-7, 1-1 Southern Athletic Conference), Allison Rademacher smacked nine kills and Kelli Holtshouser had 37 assists and three service aces.
“We played great as a team tonight,” Borden head coach D.J. Zipp said. “We were clicking on all cylinders. I think some of the girls surprised themselves tonight.”

BOYS’ SOCCER
• Devils win at Madison, 3-1: Jeff went on the road and defeated Madison, 3-1 in a Hoosier Hills Conference matchup on Thursday.
Jeff got on the board early with a Gavin Leavell header in the 10th minute off a Skyler Davis assist.
After Madison tied the score five minutes later on a penalty kick by Cody Webster, the Red Devils took the lead for good in the 30th minute on Jordan Vejar’s 35-yard free kick over the Madison wall and past its goalkeeper.
Leavell’s second goal with two minutes remaining was the only scoring of the second half. Leavell took a long pass from keeper Cauldon Feldhous and beat the Cub defense with two dribble. Feldhous had 10 saves.
