GEORGETOWN — The Jeffersonville High School boys’ swimming team claimed its third Floyd Central Sectional championship in a row on Saturday at Highland Hills Middle School, scoring 515 points.

It is the second time in the Red Devils’ history they have won three consecutive sectional titles. The previous instance was from 2004-2006.

“I hope to keep it up next year,” said Jeff coach Keith Gast, who pointed out that his team’s primary focus now is to try to finish in the top 10 in the IHSAA State Finals next weekend at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Red Devil juniors Karol Schmuck and Timothy “T” Martin each had productive days, as both swimmers qualified for next weekend’s state finals in four events.

Individual sectional winners and swimmers who reached the state time standard advance to state. Also, swimmers who are among the top 32 times in sectionals across the state in their respective events qualified for state. These competitors should find out Sunday whether they reached the state finals by this route.

Schmuck captured the 100-yard freestyle title with a time of 48.17 seconds. Martin’s lone individual victory on Saturday came in the 500 freestyle in 4:45.01.

Both swimmers were a part of Jeff’s victorious 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

The 200 medley relay squad, which included sophomore Evan Shive and senior Josh Phelps, took first place in a pool-record time of 1:37.18. Shive and Phelps joined Martin and Schmuck in forming the winning 400 free relay team, which posted a time of 3:12.96.

Schmuck and Phelps helped the Red Devils’ 200 freestyle relay squad win in 1:28.01. Jeff seniors Alec McAtee and Zach Krininger were a part of the team.

Martin earned a return trip to state in the 50 freestyle. He swam below the state time standard in 21.64 seconds to finish second. Martin was fourth in the 50 free at last year’s state finals.

Shive joined Martin and Schmuck as a Red Devil who qualified for state in four events. Shive recorded state-cut times in the 100 butterfly (52.18) and 100 backstroke (51.98), placing second in each event. Shive’s time in the 100 butterfly was below the old pool record.

“I’m pleased with how we did. I’m real happy,” Gast said. “We had 22 of our 24 swimmers in the finals, and we had lifetime-bests across the board.”

The host Highlanders finished second with 384 points as they won four events.

Floyd Central senior Oscar Anderson booked his return trip to state by winning two events. Anderson won the 200 individual medley in 1:56.16, followed by a triumph in the 100 backstroke in 51.65 seconds.

Highlander senior Kyle Crater will be joining his classmate at the state finals after he won the 200 freestyle in 1:46.07.

The other individual sectional champion for Floyd Central was Dylan Nichols in the diving competition. The senior diver placed first with a pool-record score of 429.10 points.

Nichols advances to the Bloomington North Diving Regional on Tuesday. He must finish in the top eight spots at regional to qualify for the state finals.

“I’m really pleased,” said Highlanders’ coach Joe Perkins, who lauded Nichols’ effort. “Obviously, Oscar’s times are fantastic. We had some great relays, too.”

New Albany senior Luke Lete is returning state after picking up two victories at sectional. He repeated as the 100 butterfly champion with a pool-record time of 51.89 seconds. Lete also won the 50 freestyle in 21.23 seconds, .41 seconds faster than Martin, the defending sectional champion.

Lete led the Bulldogs to a seventh-place finish in the team standings with 142 points.

Silver Creek finished 11th as a team with 50 points. Senior Gabe Salinas posted the highest finish for the Dragons, finishing eighth in the 200 individual medley.
