HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Bulldogs carry over invite title with 5-0 win

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — After winning the New Albany Invitational on Saturday, the New Albany boys’ tennis team carried that momentum over on Monday with a 5-0 home victory over Clarksville.

Winning in singles action for the Bulldogs were Alex Stewart, Kyle Landrum and Hayden Sizemore. The New Albany No. 1 doubles tandem of Luke Garmon and Christian Meyer defeated Matt Denton and Alex Stepp, 6-0, 6-1. At two doubles, Robby Erskine and Shuaib Mirani downed the Generals’ Killian Hart and Jonathan Paris, 6-0, 6-0.

“Given the fact that this was a Monday and coming off of a nice weekend, I was concerned that our focus wouldn’t be there and we would let down,” New Albany head coach Bob Dusch said. “We did see some lack of concentration and some shoddy play. But overall we picked it up and did a nice job.”

The Bulldogs will visit Borden on Thursday.



GIRLS’ GOLF

• Bulldogs fall at Brownstown: New Albany dropped a dual meet against host Brownstown at Hickory Hills Golf Course, 197-225.

Holly Roth carded the Bulldogs’ lowest score with a 46. Rounding out the scoring for New Albany were Haley Roth with a 58, Kayla Korinek with a 59 and Lindsey Munshaur with a 62.

The Bulldogs travel to Corydon today.



• Bowyer, Fluhr lead Dragons to tri-meet win: The Silver Creek girls’ golf team had two players share medalist honors on Monday at Hidden Creek Golf Club in winning a home triangular match with Madison and Southwestern. The Cubs placed second with a 183, while the Rebels fielded an incomplete team.

The Dragons’ Megan Bowyer and Kimi Fluhr each shot a 40 to post the meet’s lowest score. Teammate Ashleigh Bowyer fired a 41 and Morgan Fleming chipped in a 47.

“I’m really pleased with our progress. We keep improving in the little things it seems each week,” Silver Creek head coach Joe Ledbetter said. “Our players are very serious about their goals and hopefully by the time the (Mid-Southern) Conference Tourney rolls around, we’ll be ready to compete for the championship. I really like how competitive we are with each other, but also how very supportive we are. That’s key to team-building. Megan Bowyer continues her steady play, but is always being pushed by Kam Salings, Kimi Fluhr and her sister Ashleigh.”

The Dragons visit New Salisbury Golf Course today to face North Harrison and Crawford County.



BOYS’ TENNIS

• Dragons roll past Pirates: Silver Creek improved its MSC record to 3-0 with a 5-0 road triumph versus Charlestown. The Dragons only dropped four games during the match.

Singles winners for Silver Creek were Jacob Perkins, Nick Quinkert and David Williams.

At No. 1 doubles, the Dragons’ Luke Gillenwater and Jacob Loveland prevailed over Kevin Heil and Ben Delaney, 6-0, 6-0. At two doubles, Silver Creek’s Jacob Barnett and Josh Crase defeated Andrew Gregory and Kegan Fetz, 6-0, 6-1.

The Dragons (4-0) will entertain 11th-ranked Jeffersonville on Wednesday. It will be a rematch of last year’s Silver Creek Regional final, won by the Red Devils 4-1. The Pirates host Borden today.
