SOUTH BEND —
One day after a perfect opening to the Little League 11-12 softball state tournament, Silver Creek’s second game was far from perfect.
With several players battling the symptoms of a stomach virus the Silver Creek 11-12 softball team fell to 1-1 in pool play with a 10-2 loss to Riverfield on Thursday.
The Creek offense managed to generate just four hits in the contest, all singles off the bats of Dana Shields, Lexie McAfee, Abby Whitlock and Kylee Sumner.
Creek managed a run in the first inning when Kami Pennington walked, stole her way around and scored on a passed ball. Whitlock scored in a similar fashion after hitting her way on in the sixth.
Things weren’t much better defensively. McAfee surrendered eight runs in four innings of work as the starter, while Laci Pearce gave up two more in two innings of relief.
Catcher Zoie Zimmerman left the game after the first inning on account of illness.
Silver Creek (1-1) faces Paoli on Friday and Zionsville on Saturday. Silver Creek will need to win both games to advance to the semifinals on Monday.
