NEW ALBANY —
Freshman forward Andrea Owen scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the IU Southeast women’s basketball team to a 72-66 home win over Kentucky Christian on Saturday.
Heather Wheat added 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals in the victory. The Grenadiers’ Ashmere Woods and Kortney Woods each had 11 points.
The Grenadiers (12-9) led by one points at halftime and used a 12-2 run to open up an 11-point lead early in the second half. They were sparked by Owen’s three second-half 3-point field goals.
IU Southeast led by as many as 17 points, but the Grenadier offense went cold midway through the second half. The Knights outscored the Grenadiers 15-6 to cut the lead to two with 2:27 left in regulation.
The lead stayed between three and six points for IU Southeast for the remainder of the game. Owen secured the win with an offensive rebound and putback of a Wheat missed free throw to give the Grenadiers a 71-66 lead with 13 seconds to play.
Tanya Bowens had 17 points and seven rebounds for the Knights, who dropped to 12-11. Also for Kentucky Christian, Monica Stevens had 13 points and nine rebounds and Sharonda Jones added 11 points.
IU Southeast will head to Alice Lloyd next Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
