H.S. ROUNDUP: Late free throws lift Eastern past CAI, 51-49

New Wash continues winning ways; New Albany, Henryville games postponed

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Jude Olesh hit two free throws with eight seconds left to give Eastern a 51-49 win at Christian Academy on Saturday.

After Olesh’s free throws, James Martin’s 3-point attempt to give the Warriors the victory came up short.

The loss was CAI’s ninth of the season. Five of those have been by five points or fewer.

“That’s been the story of our season,” CAI coach Steve Kerberg said. “Eastern’s a quality team. They hung with Corydon [on Friday].”

While the Musketeers played on Friday, Christian Academy’s schedule game against Trinity Lutheran was postponed. Kerberg thought the interruption may have hurt his team.

“We just had such a great week of practice,” he said. “The game got canceled yesterday and we were flat tonight. I really felt like we could have won the game.”

It was reported in Saturday’s News and Tribune that the CAI-Trinity game was rescheduled for Feb. 9. Kerberg said that date didn’t work and no new date has been set.

On Saturday, CAI was led again by Aaron Hayes, who had a game-high 28 points. Hayes now has 9,996 career points. He will look to go over the 1,000-point mark Thursday at home against Madison Shawe (7-10).

Aaron Eldridge added nine, including a pair of 3-pointers for the Warriors.

R.J. Jackson had a team-high 19 points for the Musketeers, who host 0-13 Henryville on Thursday.

• New Wash sweeps weekend: A night after upsetting Lanesville on the road, New Washington beat visiting Trinity Lutheran 48-39 on Saturday.

The win gives the Mustangs eight on the season, a year after going 1-21.

“It’s all the kids,” New Wash coach Jonathan May said. “I’m not meaning this as a putdown from last year, but they had a losing mentality most of last year. It’s the same group of kids, but they took it upon themselves [to become a winner]. The program still isn’t where I’d like it to be, but from last year to this, they’ve completely turned it around.”

Once again, the Mustangs took control with a strong second half. After trailing 22-19 at the half, New Wash outscored the Cougars 29-17 in the second half.

“We got some good looks in the first half, but we just didn’t convert,” May said. “I thought defensively, we were pretty good [in the second half].”

Tim Cochran led a balanced New Wash attack with 11 points. Ian Hughes and Wesley Napier scored nine apiece,  while Logan Miles chipped in with seven.

Luke Stuckwisch had a game-high 14 points, including all four of the 5-12 Cougars’ 3-pointers in the defeat.

NEXT: New Washington (8-9) hosts Beth Haven, Ky. (6-12), Thursday.

• New Albany, Henryville games postponed: The New Albany-Jennings County Hoosier Hills Conference showdown that was scheduled for Saturday was postponed due to winter weather. It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Henryville’s contest at Crawford County on Saturday was also postponed. It will be played on Thursday, Feb. 21.
